A tour through the Schloss at any time is impressive, but if you have a chance to join in one of the infrequent candle light tours do not miss it! Around Christmas and new years they give the night tours, and this year they ended up with a coral presentation in the Great Hall. It ran chills down your back! Worth the effort any time, but truly impressive by candle light!

Read about the tour and decided to go. No one else showed up so we got a private tour. Beautiful castle, still owned and used by the Wittelsback family, full of history and beauty. Well worth while.

The Schloss is not well sign posted and it yet a treasure with superb architecture and a very interesting collection too. I recommend it!

It is a nice little area, and on a sunny day the Ice Cream shop is a big yes. I was told it was a ten minute walk by the visitors centre; I am sure ten minutes is the same in Germany as else where in the world. A bit of a hike, but a nice twenty or so minute walk; and I was not dawdling.

If you've seen the bigger Bavarian castles like Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau, or Ludgwig's Linderhof palace, you may not be impressed with this one. However, if you have a rainy afternoon in Berchtesgaden, it is still worth seeing. It has an interesting history between monastery and royal family that resided there. The inside has some areas that are truly beautiful and the tour seemed to be very in depth as compared to other tours we have taken. The only con...the tours are only in German. There is text available in multiple languages that you can follow along on (although the rooms are not labeled and the guide covers several "room" histories right in the main area so it's easy to lose your place). Also, the translation is not as in depth as the guided tour...things can be missed if you do not understand enough German to know what the guide said is not in the text (ex: one area was used by monks and then by the children of the royal family, it only discusses the monks in the text).
