I can't say anything much better that what is already written. We took many, many tours to Satlzberg, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, but I consider this the best of the best! The town of Berchtesgaden was wonderful. Such a pretty place. Would I go back to the Eagle's Nest and Berchtesgaden? Most certainly, I would love to! Looking at U Tube and watching at Eva
Brau and Hitler and others at the tea house and to think I was there as well. Wow!! Our tour guide took us down the hill on foot to see the location of Hitler's house at the bottom. It was bombed by the Americans and further taken down by the German's, so that nothing remained. But there was some foundation left which had a lot of moss and weeds around. I though that was really amazing.

We ended our 17 day trip through Belgium, Holland, Germany and Austria with 2 nights in Salzburg. We had made internet reservations to take the "Hiller's Nest" Tour for Saturday afternoon June 15,2013. We checked out of our hotel late morning and drove 35 minutes to Bertesgarden. We were very glad to discover that David would be leading the tour. The tour went off without a hitch and was interesting on many levels. My wife and daughter had both expressed misgivings over the idea of being where Hitler had been, but the tour was about so much more than that. David's presentation of the history was riveting, the location was breathtaking, and the construction of the bunkers, tunnels and elevator shaft was almost unbelievable. This tour felt like a perfect educational exclamation point to our trip. By the way, the drive to Munich airport that evening was beautiful.

The visit to this site is unforgettable, particularly when combined with a decent tour of the bunker system below. I was aware that Hitler had his retreat here, but not that there were four miles of tunnels connecting Nazi leadership bunkers below. The historical interest combined with the incredible views and alpine environment make this a definite place to visit.

There are many ways to do this trip. It's very close to Salzburg so you can take a bus trip from there and not far from Munich. On that type of tour, they give you a historical perspective on the way to the bottom of the mountain where you catch the bus. Rather than doing this, we were on the way from Salzburg to Munich so we drove. Thus, we didn't know too many details of the area. We bought a book and a video which gave all the info we needed, but it would have been nice to have known alll that before we actually saw the building. You park and ride a bus up a very steep roadway. The views of the Alps are amazing. It would not be an easy ride for anyone who is scared of heights. After you arrive at the parking lot, the scary part is over. You go through a long very cool tunnel and go up a long elevator to reach the Eagle's Nest. The building itself might be a disappointment if you are expecting it to be just as it was when HItler was there. There is an exhibit about the building but most of it is a restaurant. We ate and had good food there. We felt it was well worth the time, but don't expect an commentary on either the bus or at the top.

This is an excellent historical tour, the format similar to the WWII tours in Normandy. It was a great experience, and easily doable as a day trip from Salzburg. It's easiest to take the bus from Salzburg to the Berchtesgaden train station -- the tour office shares a building with the Tourist Information office across the street from the train station. The tour runs from 1:15 to about 5:00, returning in plenty of time to catch the bus back to Salzburg. There are a number of options nearby if you want to catch a quick lunch before the tour. (The bakery around the corner makes great sandwiches.)

Erika was our guide. She spoke perfect English, was extremely knowledgeable, and was quite enthusiastic about history. It was quite detailed and fascinating, sights were well-explained as we went, and she happily answered our many questions. We toured the bunker and the accompanying museum, then boarded one of the special busses that go up the mountain, a single lane winding road with a very steep grade and spectacular views. There is free time to explore at the top.

Advance reservations are required. Keep in mind that it is at the mercy of the weather -- if there is snow (which there was 2 days before my September tour) the road is closed and the tour would be canceled. Also, the fog rolls in quickly at the top, so visibility may not be the greatest. They say that there is only a 50% chance of a mostly or completely clear day up there, and I got lucky. Even without the spectacular Alpine views, this tour is well worth it if you love history.
