Gasthaus Pension Salzberg
Ranked #34 of 55 Berchtesgaden B&B and Inns
Reviewed August 27, 2012 via mobile

First impressions : This is a slightly drab Gasthaus on the outskirts of the charming village of Berchtesgaden.

Our room was probably last redecorated in 1955. We were not provided soap or shampoo. Our shower curtain was essentially useless. The beds creak with every little movement. Not good for jiggy-jiggy !

Another guest lost power to his room but the proprietor had left for the day ( at 18:00).

The location is not good for anything other than the salt mine tour. It's a 20 minute walk up hill into the village.

Our overall impression is that this Gas thus requires a thorough renovation to bring it up to modern standard, but that its relatively inexpensive price is still fair as is. Still , it is somewhat of a disappointment, so use as a last resort.

A small family operated place adjacent to the Sallach river...just next to the salt mine..a must visit. Only stayed one night as passing through but would be ideal base for cycling or hiking. Well recommended

We stayed here for one night by recommendation of the Tourist Info office. Terrible! We were told they had WiFi (one of the only reasons we decided on this hotel), and WiFi was written as one of the amenities on our reservation sheet, but upon arrival they said they did not have it. There was no hot water whatsoever and no soap in the bathroom. Breakfast was minimal, although the coffee was good. There was a banana already placed on my plate that was partially ripped open. No thanks! We were made to pay in advance upon checking in, and now I can see why.

* Decor - mmmm 1970's time-warp. Seriously tacky, tacky, tacky.
* Hard bed, thin duvets, hard pillows.
* Balcony - potential, but, plastic furniture, no plants, outlook, was remainder of the property, sadly neglected. and gross looking.
* No suitcase support in room.
* Bathroom - no toiletries whatsover, not even the merest sliver of soap. Loo-paper. Hard, vile, corrugated. and cheap, cheap, cheap. Loo-roll holder, a piece of twisted black wire, difficult to get new loo roll back onto. Why?
* Scary looking plug and wires hanging out of wall. Thank God I didn't have little kids with me.
* Breakfast, poor-house and pathetic compared with gorgeous and impressive feasts in other parts of beautiful Germany. A yoghurt, what looked like a boiled egg, but rock hard, few bits of meat and cheese.
* Evening meal was good.

Altogether an incredibly disappointing experience, following fab hotel stays and outstanding food in Nuremburg and Munich.

But the most disappointing and weird thing was the "attitude" of the proprietors. We hoped to negotiate with them in a civilised way and offered less than the full rate they were charging - not cheap, hoping they would meet us half-way. Had they responded in a friendly and sympathetic way, and charged us less, we would have been happy to have shaken hands on it, walked away. However, they went into a very scary rant mode, accusing us of ripping the plug out of the wall, making a mark on the wall with our luggage and were completely objectionable.

Because of this, thumbs down guys.

Not a fair exchange or good example of, well, anything really.

We were all very upset and quite shaken by the rants and went straight to the nearest Tourist Advice outlet. This rotten place is currently being investigated by the Tourist Advice people.

A rather dated "Pension" on the edge of the town. In a nutshell:
* TV socket in one room was hanging out of the wall (health & safety issue). When we brought this to the attention of the landlord, he argued that it wasn't "electrical", but only the tv cable (???). His wife said it hadn't been like that the day before, implying we'd caused the damage! (We hadn't ever moved the tv or even turned it on - friends didn't speak German).
* Cold showers and water in bathroom - landlord argued that the lukewarm temperature on day 2 was "hot", but it certainly wasn't in our books, and not hot enough for a wet shave. We endured cool showers on both days.
* Very small bedroom, whereby you couldn't open the bathroom door fully due to the bed.
* No "suitcase table", and limited floor space made unpacking difficult.
* Not even the tiniest sliver of soap to wash your hands in the bathroom. No shower gel or shampoos provided.
* Basic thin cotton duvets and very thin pillow - asked for more pillows for the 2nd night, and these were brought to us.
* Woken at 5am on day 2 by loud conversation in the courtyard below our room - when we complained about this, we were told "Well, you were out on the balcony at 11pm." Yes, but we weren't shouting or disturbing anyone!
* Breakfast was OK, but pretty basic compared to other places we stayed in on this trip (in Nuremberg and Munich - shall be posting our praise for these establishments) - rolls, jam, cheese, meat, yogurt or fruit, and a very hard-boiled egg, compared with a very extensive buffet incl. freshly baked bread at the others.
* We had dinner in the restaurant on the first night and this was tasty and plentiful local fare. I made a point of telling the landlady we'd enjoyed it.
* When we went to pay the bill, we voiced all of our concerns, and suggested a reduction in the price of 37 euro p/p/n would be appropriate. They weren't having any of it. Rude, argumentative, accused us of chipping the plaster in the hallway when we moved our suitcases! Insistent that we paid up in full. So we did - and went straight to the tourist information office armed with photos of the dangerous cable. They were extremely concerned to hear what we had to say and were going to visit the guesthouse.
