Arriving at the train and bus station, this hotel is clearly visible on the other side of the river (to the left). The advantage of this is that it is easy to walk to and, unlike most of Berchtesgaden, there is no uphill stretch to consider when bagcarrying. It also makes it handy if you are considering catching local buses to places such as Königssee.
We arrived at the hotel early and were able to leave our bags until we could check in later. On coming back to check in, despite having ordered one room to be a twin (and it was on the hotel documentation, the receptionist read it in front of us), we had been allocated two doubles. We were given the choice of a double or a twin which the receptionist described as "not our best room". In fact, for one night, it was fine, however, I was a little disappointed that, having made a specific request, it had not been picked up. If we had stuck to the double room (and, as per most hotels in Germany, a double bed is two singles joined up), we would have got a balcony.
Room was very warm, beds very comfortable. TV does not have English channels. Bathroom is adequate and clean. The swimming pool area and sauna is not big, however, it is sufficient. Towels did not seem to be specifically provided for the swimming pool area, requiring that the room towels are used (and either dried or replaced).
We were surprised that the restaurant was closed for the evening. The receptionist gave us some options for an evening meal - they were all very helpful at the desk. There is a vending machine in the main building, however, we discovered that our key to Block B (where most of the bedrooms are) did not fit the door to that area - also the machine was only taking notes.
Breakfast, we were surprised to find tables reserved - not sure if that is a common practice in this hotel or whether there were specific groups visiting - however, there was plenty of room and the buffet was just about being replenished fast enough for everyone in the room.
If going into the town, please be aware that, along to the left of the station main door, there is an archway into the building marked "zum Markt" which is a shortcut up some stairs and across a bridge to the town - it saves walking the long way around the road.
Generally this hotel was fine for a short stay for a brief visit to the area. However, I would say that I felt it was overpriced for what I got (although this is a very expensive part of Germany), its more cheap weekend break standard of hotel that happens to have pool and sauna. That said, I would go back because it is OK and the position is good.
