“Initial disappointment ... but did get better”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2009

Arrived at hotel on Thursday 9 July for a two night stay. Initially disappointed - no obvious sign at car park so little hard to find entrance and looked a little run down from outside.

Check-in was quick - given corner room on 1st floor (standard) overlooking pedestrian zone and fountain. Large and clean but decor a little dated (and alth' not bad it wasn't not up to usual Radisson standard in my opinion) - bathroom was spotless and looked as if it had been refurbed recently. Poor TV choice for non-German speakers and no tea/coffee facilities (although a bottle of water and some fruit was in the room on arrival).

Location though is perfect - well sited in centre town (and also within its own park area) - easy walk to shops and some cafes/restaurants. The town itself (as is the hotel) is probably more geared for an older clientele.

Hotel also has a small gym, pleasant pool area overlooking the park/gardens and a spa. Very pleasant Bavarian style restaurant also attached to hotel - where the food was reasonably priced and tasty.

All in all my initial disappointment did change. The hotel was quiet, clean and comfortable and proved to be an ideal base for a couple of days in a very scenic location.

We enjoyed staying here, the hotel is about 20 km from Salzburg, in a picturesque setting in a small town. The room was spacious and well equipped. The value was excellent for us since we were able to book a special rate.

This centrally located but very quiet hotel oozes the charm of days gone by with grand sweeping staircases and some fine public rooms and attracts the affluent, older clientele although some young families were spotted. It is situated in its mature own park with fountain and lake and offered accommodating and friendly service. The breakfast is certainly a highlight with a huge variety. Rooms are sufficient in size, the decor a bit hit and miss but very clean; bathroom facilities clearly dated, yet kept spotless and I could not think of anything that was missing. Rooms appear to have own balconies with magnificent views of the mountains. I had a very pleasant stay with excellent value for money and would return.

The room itself was not even close to 5 stars. My bathroom hadn't seen a make over in decades. The room was spacious and clean but the bed wasn't comfortable and the walls had cracks. That's where the complaints end. The staff was by far friendlist and more helpful then any other hotel I've ever stayed at. Only speaking english was never an problem. As the saying goes, location, location, location...if your looking to stay in the middle of a quiet little town and take a stroll thru town and window shop. This hotel is the right location.

Having stayed in many five star hotels around the world, I can only again and again praise the charme and service of Steigenberger hotels in general (for they do not belong to an international hotel group which standardises everything from the breakfast buffet till toilet paper) and the Axelmannstein specifically. If you are looking for a business hotel, then you might as well stay in Munich or Salzburg. The Axelmannstein opens up its elegance and character as a place of relaxation. It had been a "spa hotel" when the idea and marketing of the nowadays extremely popular "wellness and spa wave" was not even born. So the Axelmannstein is more of a Grandhotel within the Alps. As you might know, Grandhotels cannot always keep up with all international standards of modern hospitality (such as AC) but they compensate their guests with their unique charme and excellent service - beyond the hormogenity of Marriott, Inter-Contintental and Hilton. I enjoyed my 5 days at this hotel during which I had the pleasure to discover the beautiful surroundings of Bad Reichenhall including Salzburg and the Alps.

I stayed at the Steigenberger Axelmannstein in June 2003.The hotel is located in the centre of the town of Bad Reichenhall which is a "Kurort" ->in Germany only Citys get the prename "Bad" , e.g. Bad Woerishofen, Bad Reichenhall and so on,if they have certain standards, like: special hospitals, healing hot springs, "Clean-Air"-Standards and so on...)Bad Reichenhall itself is a very small town (only 20000 people life there). Although the Region of the "Berchtesgardener Land" is around it, you will only see nice views of mountains a couple of cafés and a lot of special hospitals located all around it.If you are looking for a city with more to see and do, I recomend you staying in Salzburg which is located only about 13 miles south of Bad Reichenhall. But back to the Steigenberger Axelmannstein: Like i said the hotel is located in the centre of the town of Bad Reichenhall. Since it was a 5 Star hotel my girl friend and me arrived there and the first impression was very raunchy. Although it wasn´t dirty the interior and exterior of the lobby are remains of te 1960 and 1970´s and not kept well in shape. The hotel employess were very polite and helpfull in every way A++ for that. Now to the rooms: Like I already said about the lobby, the same thing about the Rooms. Clean but old fashioned very spare interior and that for the price of almost USD 280/per night? NO WAY! That was really disappointing. We also had no pillows and had to call houskeeping extra for them. After 45 mins we finally had them. The rooms in general have TV and bath but no AC, which will kill you on hot days. The Bar "Axel Bar": The Bar has a nice ambience and comfortable couches, so you can have nice quite evening. There is also almost every evening live music. But it wasn´t my taste. The Cocktails which are served at the bar are at a reasonable price, but the worst I have ever had. Tip: If you really want one, only drink the Cuba Libre (lime, coke and rum) that was the only half way good one.The breakfast buffet: The Restaurant in which it is served is very nice. On "good weather days" you can sit outside on the patio where you have a nice view of the park. The food features nothing spectacular but you have all standards(like omlete, different juices, sausages, bacon, diffent toasts and jams....) in a lot of variations. And it tastes good. The Restaurant "Axel Stüberl": It is kept in Bavarian Style interior and the food also. Although it isn´t the best bavarian food I ate (Schlemmerpfanne mit Spätzle -> Pork in a traditional bavarian gravy sauce, baked over with cheese and a kind of "soft noodles (Spätzle)". You can try it. Tip: Go to Salzburg in the "St. Peter Stift". Oldest restaurant in Europe and very good.Overall: The Axelmannstein is not everyones taste. It´s not the moneys worth. Also if you would like to stay at a hotel with a bavarian traditon and a real deluxe 5 star standard stay either at the "Bayrischer Hof" in Munich or if you like the alps set arund it the Hotel try the "Bachmair am See" ... in the town of Schliersee (<- one of the best Hotels i stayed at, and in a real bavarian alps flair)Hope my review helped you,Chris
