An incredible experience to see the Festspielhaus even without the opera. I had a guided tour with a small group and was highly impressed by the special facilities that were made to make the most to obtain the "ideal" acoustics. A pity the festival season was over, but I understand it takes years and years to get tickets. Worth a visit even though there is no performance.

We were lucky enough to be visiting in September when visits inside are possible. It's a short guided tour in German (with an entertaining printed English translation) but it was fascinating to actually get inside the auditorium, the stage and the sunken orchestra pit. Why didn't other opera house follow this example? Wagner really did know what he was doing. Apart from the brilliant acoustics, every single seat has a complete view of the stage. It's obvious really! (September and October are the only months for visits inside)

Seeing Wagner in its home is just an amazing experience. However, the seat prices will knock your eyes out. But it's worth it. Only problem of course is that you are very unlikely to be ever able to get any tickets unless you are very lucky and/or patient. Whilst the singing and playing are fantastic, you may strike unlucky and get a truly appalling production. The new Ring cycle features humping crocodiles, death by baseball bat and Kalashnikov and simulated sex with Rhine Maidens, gods and, oh yes, Wotan is a mafioso. Pity Wagner forgot to write in those bits, but the director, Frank Castorf didn't. More booing than in a Victorian melodrama.

contrary to the general opinion of the Wagnerians visiting The Festspiele this summer, I enjoyed the new setting by Frank Castorf. Especially the Rheingold and the Siegfried was particular good, whereas the Valküre and Götterdämmerung was a bit below average. Hurry up to sign up for tickets if you have not done so already, as there are 10 years of waiting time for tickets

This is our 5th Ring Cycle in 13 months and, obviously, the one we'd been particularly looking forward to. So far disappointed in the productions although most of the singing has been good. Also disappointed that the theatre is still covered in scaffolding for the 200th anniversary.
