Arvena Kongress Hotel

Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 9, 2014

I've stayed here every time I've been to the Wagner Festival and it never disappoints.

Within easy walking distance of the town centre and railway station and a robust uphill march to the Festspielhaus (though there is also a charming vintage charabanc provided).

Rooms are large and clean and staff have always been extremely polite and helpful (I'm very surprised to hear a few people say the contrary). Particular plaudits to Herr Hemile (?), the genial, friendly and efficient head barman.

For festival goers, the hotel is ideal - you can breakfast early, go out for a morning sightseeing and then back to the Hotel to catch the end of the morning buffet for lunch. The Hotel also provides complimentary light snacks (sandwiches, fruit and drinks, includfing prosecco) before the performance. It is possible to book a table in the restaurant for a late supper, should you want it.

I have no hesitation in recommending the Arvena Kongress to Festival-goers.

I stayed only 1 night at this hotel but I could easily stay more. The staff was friendly and helpful, the breakfast was good, the room was very big and it was very clean. The hotel was not far from the train station and not very far from the center. It is a recommended hotel.

Stayed in December 2013, just as the Christmas Markets started, so the Town atmosphere was great. Bayreuth is a pretty town, with nice people.
The rooms are nice, basic, the lighting is very soft ! had to go and buy a reading light for my book ! small downside, I could smell smoking in the hallways, even on a non smoking floor.
The food was really good, ( i cook for a living, so am hard to please ! ) The breakfast was very nice, but the hotel really excelled with the evening meals I had, a few different things and all were very good.
the staff are very very nice, really helpful, enjoyed my stay, would def go back.

I've only ever stayed here during Festspiele time, so can only comment on my experiences then.

Not a budget hotel, but worth it. Rooms spacious and with plenty of electrical sockets (useful for those who travel with a myriad of electronic devices).

I'd be surprised if there was a better breakfast to be found anywhere in Bayreuth. Huge selection of anything anyone could possibly want for breakfast - including eggs and omelettes cooked to order, meats, fish, cheese, bread, cereals, fruit and even wine and champagne if you are not too hung over from the night before. Served until late, then turning into brunch without a pause.

In a quiet street, so no noise from traffic or outside - although only a ten minute walk from the centre of town. Secure underground parking - the only inconvenience is having to collect a token from reception to exit. No need to take the car up to the Festspielhaus, though, as there is a free bus service available there and back. Complimentary drinks and snacks while waiting for the bus, and a late night bar for after the performances.

There are other hotels better suited to a budget stay. But, if you want to splash out, stay here.

Okay, the rooms are allright. The breakfast buffet has quite a lot on offer. The bus to the Festspielhaus is easy (however, we never managed to locate the promised bus back... Luckily taxis are quite cheap in Germany!)

But all this does not weigh up to the fact that the staff at reception were blatantly rude. Our room wasn't cleaned. Not even after, when at 15.00hrs we put the "please clean room" sign up. So, after returning from the opera, we had to get back to reception to ask for new towels. The lady did not appear to believe us, but she at least brought new towels.
However, when we mentioned it the next day, at check-out, the lady at the desk obviously didn't believe us:
- "That cannot be. That's highly unlikely. Did you leave the 'do not disturbe sign' out all day?"
- Ehh, no, we didn't. Actually, after a while we put up the 'please clean room' sign.
- "Didn't you accidently put it the wrong way round, then?"
- ....
After this, she proceeded to answer the phone. Never saying goodbye to us, never mind offering anything even remotely resembling an excuse.

We stayed here as part of a bus tour and found it to be rather bland-looking, especially from the outside. However our room was spacious although the lighting was poor, as it is in most hotels (am I the only person in the world who likes to read a little in bed before going to sleep??). It was quiet as we weren't facing the road or the entrance to the hotel. The bathroom was good without being fancy and no toiletries were provided.
The breakfast buffet provided an adequate choice of foods without being extravagant, but there was only one 2-slice toaster to cater for a roomful of people - this seems to be common in many hotels and would be very easily remedied. The buffet dinner provided for our group was very good however with lots of choice, both hot and cold.

This is a very large hotel with very long hallways access to the rooms which was not apparent when you first arrived. I think the rooms have been updated in recent years and kept in very nice conditions, but it seems that the publice area need some updating. The hotel rooms are comfortable and pleasant enough for a short stay.
The location is very nice, walking distance to historic town and parkng is free on the adjacent lot.
We were quite impressed with the breakfast quality and enjoyed it a whole lot.
We would stay there again if we go to Bayreuth in the future.
