We arrived at noon, not expecting to get access to our room, but hoping to stow our luggage while we made a side trip to Rothenburg. No-one at reception, but the bell eventually raised an unsmiling employee who, informed us, before we could even greet her, that access was only possible after 2 pm.
Fortunately when we checked in after 6 pm a different employee gave us a much warmer reception. During our two night stay these were the only staff members we saw. Even at breakfast, coffee, in flasks, was already on tables, so no staff required. No doubt this is all very efficient, but it results in an almost ghostly atmosphere.
We opted for one of the larger rooms, not realising that these overlooked the street. With hindsight we would gladly trade the traffic noise for a smaller room overlooking the gardens.

On the plus side, this hotel is sparkling clean and has very attractive decor. Breakfast was pleasant with good china, starched linen and napkins.

The hotel is a good value if you’re not too picky. We had a 4th floor walk up with two bedrooms (4 beds), sitting room and bathroom. More than enough space for two. The hotel was packed on Saturday with Germans, so its also popular with the locals.

Breakfast was a very good buffet. The staff all speak English and are very helpful. The location is excellent and there is very tight parking in the back. The bathroom lacks a stand-up shower, so it was a challenge keeping the room dry. There is a mini fridge and a small microwave.

GPS directional assistance is useless through the center of town or from a southern approach. It looks like they are replacing a main sewer culvert which runs down Promenade Strasse, the location of the hotel. You can get in easier if coming from the east. Good luck.

Thank you for your nice and helpful feedback Begg.
The best way to the Hotel is the Residenzstrasse B 14/B 13 (GPS), and turn out at the Castle and Residenz/Promenade. We have a large parkplace on the Hofwiese ( for €3,-- a day ) , near by the hotel.
We planning an 2nd elevator in our Palais and after that, all showers/bathrooms will be renovated like our new rooms and on the other side.
Best wishes from Ansbach

My husband, daughter and I stayed here for a week in June 2012 while we were house hunting for our upcoming expat assignment. The hotel does not have AC and regardless of what people tell you, it does Indeed get hot in Germany. We were up a few flights of stairs which added to the uncomfortable temps but the staff gave us a floor fan to use in our room. The no lift was a slight issue with her our daughters stroller but we managed.

We booked a room that had 2 bedrooms which was nice so that we could put our daughter to bed at a decent hour and still discuss the next days plan without disturbing her. This room happened to be on the street where the buses pass frequently to and from the train station so it was quite loud.

Also, the bathroom was detached from the room...it happened to be only used by us but I am still uncertain as to whether or not it is a shared bathroom for the hall or a private one.

Breakfast was good and very typical of a German restaurant. The staff were friendly. The hotel is in a great location to the quaint little town of Ansbach, train station and grocery shopping. If driving a car, beware that the parking lot is teeny tiny! Please do not plan on driving an SUV!

We now live in Ansbach and would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting us

Hello EuropeanNomad F,
thank you for your kind and honest feedback.
We often had families as guest when they went to Katterbach for stay at US Army, while they hunting for a house in the area.
The 2-rooms-suite is a part of an earlier large appartment, so you could be sure, you are alone for using the bathroom, every time :-) it was your private one. We have some more of that family suites for longtime stay, we comfort it with small fridgenair for cooling the drinks and your food, watercooker, microwave and other things you need.
The stuff help with lodging details and information in english, Mrs Christine is an half-american.
We are proud that you recommended us on this board and give a lasting impression,
thank you so much!
We will do our best to make our guest feel well looked after.

We stayed at the Platengarten while visiting Christmas Markets in Bavaria during December. The hotel was pleasant with a good breakfast. The hotel is very convenient to the train station and the old city. Kerstin was so very helpful with our questions and requests. She spoke excellent English and helped me with my German . the hotel is advertised as non-smoking, the owner lives in the hotel and smokes.

We found a great restaurant in the old city, the City Restaurant Lehenshof. It is run by a Greek family, but serves outstanding German food. The owner's son serves as a waiter and is a great fellow. We went there three times during our stay in Ansbach.

Dear Mr Godawg,
thank you for taking the time to give us this great feetback.
Hope you had a good time in our country and will visit us again, in spring or summer for a trip to the wonderful frankonian romantic castles, near by Ansbach and surroundings.
"The hotel is advertised as non-smoking" - no...that's a mistake, sorry, most of our hotelrooms are non-smoking guest rooms and apartments - and there it is forbitten to smoke. And yes, my 83 year old father smokes in his office at the back of the hotel, well it would be better for him without that passion...mmmhh - I can't forbid him this...in his age, you know.

We are very glad, that Kerstin could help you, of course I will forward her your very lovely comment she will be very delighted.
We wish you a happy new year from Ansbach

A very good hotel to stay.Centrally located , overlooking a beautiful garden next door...just a few yards from the down town and a few mins walk from the railway station....Rooms are spacious..neat and tidy...The hotel has both types of rooms representing --ancient and modern times...In case you would like to experience the old German culture and heritage, just ask for non smoking rooms...but be prepared to pay a little more for these rooms ( as they are more spacious and more furniture!!) and also be prepared to take your luggages up by the staircase AND without phone facility in the rooms...However the hotel also has newly made modern rooms with lift facility...You can expect a wholesome breakfast..and last but not the least ,,you are always assisted by ever smiling staff -Ms Christina and Ms Heide

We spent four nights at this hotel in early May 2012. The price was fine for the location, comfort, and excellent breakfast. Our room overlooked the street, but it didn't seem excessively noisy despite a LOT of traffic (particularly city and school buses). One of the entrances to old town is literally a 5-minute walk from the hotel, so it's very conveniently located. (By the way, apparently Germans have a much different attitude than Americans regarding pedestrians, so be VERY careful when crossing any street -- including intersections. By U.S. standards, it's dangerous!). Back to reviewing the hotel -- our room was very clean, and the bathroom had heated tile floors. Really, I have only two "complaints." The first regards the bathroom mirrors. They're elegant and ornate, but virtually useless for getting ready. The second is that the hallways may be dangerously dark at night, especially considering the need to navigate steps. Perhaps the motion detectors weren't working or are not well-placed, but we had to navigate from the top of the stairs to room 12 in total darkness one night. Nonetheless, we spent 13 days traveling in Germany and Austria and this was our favorite hotel.

We got a room that looked out toward the Plaza. While the view was nice, you get a lot of street noise, not only from the traffic, but there is a bakery with outdoor seating next door and conversations can be loud. If we stay there again, I'd ask for a garden view room. Our room was very pretty with a "wow factor" to it.

The staff was friendly, especially Christina who speaks fluent English and helped us with ideas for day trips. She sent us to Rothenburg which was only a half an hour by train from Ansbach and was wonderful.

The hotel has a small elevator which was wonderful when we needed to get our luggage up the stairs. Their breakfast room is delightful and breakfast is good. If I ever find myself in Ansbach again, I'd stay at Hotel Platengarten again.

Room Tip: If you come in by train, take the street that runs in front of the Post Office (big yellow building...

Dear Guests,
we do so appreciate your lovley review of our hotel and our staff. We 're happy you felt comfortable in our house and were satisfied with our service, in special with Christina....will forward your kudos and I think you made her day :-)

The old windows facing the street have been exchanged approx. half a year ago with new, sound-damping windows, due to the traffic-sounds and people during the day.
With closed windows the rooms are nicely quiet.
However we would love to offer you one of our rooms with a beautiful view to the city park the next time you should plan a trip to Ansbach.
Thank you for your critic and we hope to welcome you soon again as guests in the Hotel Platengarten.
with warmest regards
