Not sure how this place is in the summer. During the fall it was magical. Took the train to Prien. We walked the couple of miles through town from the train station to the Boat station at the Lake. There are boats that travel back and forth to the Island. There were not a lot of tourists. Benedictine abbey of Frauenwörth on the Island is now a museum that contains a fabulous collection of art by german artists. There is a great restaurant on the Island. Also, why go to Versailles when you can see King Ludwig's copy on the Island. Amazing.

Would you like to enjoy silent and colorful Bavarian autumn? Just take the bicycle (you can rent it everywhere around the "Bavarian see" a do the circle trip on the Chiemsee shore.
Nice and not challenging trip (55 kilometers, 40 miles) offers a lot of excellent view on Alps and see, there is not as heavy traffic on the bike rout as in summer months and if you are fortunate - and have sunny day - you can swim in the crystal clear water.
Lot of restaurants invite you for having rest and choose something from "Tagesangebot" - daily offers - clear water fishes recommended.
The only negative thing is, that the part of rout (15 %) leads close to frequented A8 highway.

I first visited HerrenChiemsee in 1987 as an undergradute history Degree student staying in St.Johann Austria - the local tour company had a day trip to the Lake to see King Ludwigs 'Versailles Style Castle(Schloss) '. At the time the Palace/Castle was dyed an attractive light orange colour which oddly I preferred to todays original white stone - it seemed oddly Continental and refreshingly cheerful compared to the stuffy and repressive English attitude to heritage stones. One really must go inside the castle to appreciate the beauty of it's decor and Art. Of all ludwigs castles this is my favourite. On a quiet day the sense of isolation and peace amid the beauty of the lake reflects the Tranquility Ludwig must have had in mind when he commissioned the palace building.

Chiemsee Lake should be on the list of all tourists that visit Bavaria! Just take the boat, relax, enjoy the view of a beautiful lake, then stop at Herrenchiemsee Castle which is a magnificent place, a copy of Versailles!

The service is very provincial and not always as friendly as Americans are accustomed to, but that isn't personal towards you. That's just the way they are. The scenery is magnificent and the two islands are must-see stops.
