This small hostel has such a chilled and welcoming atmosphere - the owner Anja is very laid-back, friendly and helpful and just makes you feel so happy to be there. The building is old and atmospheric and the kitchen and living spaces are so lovely, with cool retro furniture, all the facilities you could need, and even a lovely chandelier! There's free teas and coffee and an 'honesty bar' with beers, drinks and snacks for when you get a bit peckish in the middle of the night.
The rooms are spacious and bright, with high ceilings, the beds are comfortable and cosy and the bathrooms are spotless. You have a choice of single, twin, three-bed or four-bed rooms.
But I suppose most of all it is the atmosphere, the friendliness of the host, the really cool and lovely people who you will meet staying there that sets this hostel apart (it is not btw a rowdy party hostel). We just felt so at home and met so many interesting people during our stay.
The location is absolutely perfect: just a short stroll over the bridge across the Danube to the enchanting old town centre, and there is also a bus stop nearby with a good bus service (no. 7) into the town and to and from the train and bus stations.
Cyclists are welcome (it's a Bike and Bett hostel) and there are facilities for bikes. You can also borrow a bike from the hostel to do what I believe is a very nice cycle along the banks of the Danube for miles either way... the town itself is also good for cycling...
Ulm itself was a revelation to us: it is extremely atmospheric with a medieval centre with gorgeous little cobblestoned streets with half-timbered old houses leaning crookedly over little waterways, the highest church tower in the world, a raft of very good bakeries, cafes and restaurants, and some good modern art galleries (there's currently a pop art exhibition, 'American Idols', on with paintings by Warhol, Rothko, etc) and museums (such as the quirky but wonderful Museum of Bread Culture).
The weather in this part of Germany is pretty good too in the summer - so what more can I say - go there and stay at the Brickstone!!!
