When the weather is nice, people are out and about, the beer is flowing and the food is delicious, what is left to critique? Maybe we could say that we had to wait a few minutes to find a table with an opening to sit, seemingly because the beer garden is so popular. That's about it. Previous positive reviews seem to be on the mark. I'm going back to have the flammkuchen again.

This restaurant and beer garden is a 20 minute or so walk from Kelley Barracks, and also from Plieningen. It is a wonderful place to spend the summer evenings after a walk in the beautiful botanical gardens across the street. I came here alone and with friends several times. The "Dinette" is similar to a Flammenkuchen, a thin and light flaky crust flatbread, but without any tomato sauce. My friends and schnitzel and ravioli. Every enjoyed their dishes. If you just want a drink, you can order it at the counter in the middle of the beer garden. They have beer on tap as well as bottle. The local pills is served in a nice stoneware mug. A 500ml beer is 3.40 euro as of Aug 2013. There are some options for vegetarians such as spatzle and the Dinettes.

There is a charming fountain with a bust of the brewing monk Paulaner. You can sit under a canopy of lush greenery on a shared bench and be content here.

Benches and chairs under a canopy of green leaves makes Garbe the ideal place to enjoy a cool beer on a spring day. The beer is served out of water chilled 'stone' tankards from an outside counter whilst waitresses flit around serving the house specialty: flammkuchen in various flavours. For those who have not tried it it is an experience - a thin savoury pastry base with toppings such as ham, onion etc - the whole thing is served on a wooden board and tastes delicious. Cooked in a wood fired oven in the beer garden itself.
Inside the Garbe has a very cosy restaurant serving local specialties. It is very popular so be sure to book on s Friday or Saturday night.
The Hohenheim University Botanical Garden is just 200 meters away to walk off the delicious food after lunch....

On a business trip to Stuttgart, a colleague and myself were holed up in the Mercure Hotel at Stuttgart Messe (see my review on how that was) with nowhere to eat within walking distance. Took a taxi to this place one night and we were both very impressed. Lovely place, very warm and cosy with friendly staff that spoke excellent English. We shared 'The Berkel at the Garbe' which was a lovely selection of cold meats, cheeses and pickles served on a wooden board with lots of the fantastic home baked bread and home made butter (I could have just had the bread and been happy). Warning: small portion is sufficient for two people sharing! For the main course my colleague had the DInnette, a lovely take on pizza with sour cream instead of tomato sauce. I had the Swabian roast with fried potatoes and more of the delicious bread. Best piece of meat I've had for some time and the potatoes were delicious - good sized portions. Very good value - all that with a large beer and a bottle of wine for less than 70 EU! Will be back next time I am in the area.

Dinnette is their version of pizza but instead of tomato paste, they used sour cream, and it is sooooo delicious! Really in love with the German pizza. We also tried the other Swabian (their region) dish, maultaschen - which was somewhat like a big ravioli, which is quite good too.
