We sat outside in the courtyard to eat; I loved the steak with fried onions and potatoes!

Drinking our dinners every night may be enjoyable, but we also needed solid sustenance. The desk clerk at the mo.hotel recommended the Neuer Ochen, practically next door. We ended up eating (and drinking) here twice, a Tuesday and Thursday night.

The restaurant was one of the nicer ones in the area, in that there was an occasional live musician; plenty of space that was well-lit, inside and out; and the interior did not depend upon dark wood paneling and posters for its decor. Instead, there were warm orange-yellow walls, medium wood flooring and copper and glass light fixtures. And a life-size Jean Paul Gaultier perfume dispenser in the ladies room.

For the first dinner, we chose to sit inside at first. The server brought us menus in English instantly (how *can* they tell so quickly we're tourists?). We both swore that the server said "crab" was the tagessuppe (soup of the day); a tasty broth it was, and it was all broth, but in no way did it contain anything from the sea. I ordered the sauerbraten, a beef steak in red wine with potato dumplings. That was not so great, being a bit tough; my colleague's putenfilet (grilled turkey) was much yummier. I didn't care for the dumplings either. So far, this meal was a bust.

Then we moved outside with our drinks (Sanwald Hefeweizen for me) and the evening turned brighter. A singer, supported by a pianist, provided much entertainment for our drunken ears, as we were convinced he was the German version of Ethan Hawke's character in "Reality Bites".

Our second meal went better for me. As it was much chillier and Ethan Hawke was nowhere in sight (boo), we stayed indoors throughout. I started with the tomatencremesuppe, which I thought was very good. It was not until much later (like, when I was writing this review) that I realized I didn't receive the mozzarella sticks, only a piece of bread. Oh well. For dinner I avoided all beef and went with the schnitzel jager art, pork in mushroom cream sauce with hush puppies. This dish was very delicious and I cleaned my plate.

One of the reasons we returned particularly was to have dessert. Although we were both stuffed from beer and dinner, we went with dessert. Or tried to; my colleague wanted the hausgemachter ofenschlupfer: homemade deliciousness with apples and vanilla sauce. Unfortunately, we never found out what the deliciousness was, as the kitchen was out of it. She consoled herself with wine; I ordered the mousse. A rather large plate containing two scoops of chocolate mousse, whipped cream, marinated fruits and a cookie arrived. Oh boy. My colleague wimped out and only took a spoonful. What I had, was good, but I couldn't finish it due to the sheer volume of sweet stuff.

Most of our meal items here were delicious, the atmosphere was relaxed, and the service was very good. The restaurant is not inexpensive, but if the dish chosen is a good one, it could be worth the premium paid to not eat in a smoky hole-in-the-wall.

The staff at the restaurant are very helpful and friendly but the time for food to arrive can sometimes be too long. If you are looking to go for lunch and are on a tight timescale I would suggest phoning ahead to pre order your food. I would say the food is a little overpriced for what it is but is okay none the less.

Nice place to go for drinks and in the summer months there are tables and chairs outside with waiter service.
