“One of the best places we've ever stayed!”
Reviewed May 30, 2011

We chose this place based on a friend's recommendation, and it was the best place we stayed on our vacation throughout Berlin, Munich, and Heidelberg. Not only were the room and amenities comfortable and convenient, the owner went above and beyond to help us make the most of our trip. He suggested plenty of ideas for day trips and afternoon activities, loaned us a set of bikes for our day in Schwetzingen, and always welcomed us back to the B&B with a smile and genuine interest in how we were enjoying our stay.

The value for the cost was also a definite plus - with free (delicious!!) breakfast, free internet, free parking, and free use of facilities (like bikes) among the list of many added perks.

If you're looking for a great place to stay near Heidelberg or Schwetzingen - don't pass up this gem!

We reserved this hotel based on the reviews stating that it was in the countryside and the owners were very helpful... and we definitely cannot agree more! This was our first stop in our visit to Germany, where we wanted to see Heidelberg- but also be able to "bike in the countryside" of Germany. This was the perfect place! We could take the country bike trails to Heidelberg, Schwetzingen, and so many other cute towns close by. It was also great because Volker (the owner) gave us many tips on local restaurants and places to see away from the touristy town of Heidelberg. The breakfast was great- and we definitely plan to go back someday soon!!

This place is amazing. A little rural retreat close enough to be close but far enough out that it feels like you are someplace truly special. It's not int the middle of town by any means so if you want to drink and then stumble home, go elsewhere.

They rent out rooms to longer term guests who are the nicer people you could ever meet. This places feels like you are staying with friends, or even family. Truly, this is the best "hotel" experience I ever remember.

I'm not going to rehash all the good things that have been written here already about Kurpfalzhof. It's all true and then some.
Quiet location, nice rooms and super-friendly and helpful owners and staff being the main trump cards. One of the few hotels I've been in where the doors to the rooms don't slam shut with a loud bang reverberating through the hotel at half past midnight when the noisy teenaged kids of the couple next door come home or at 5 AM in the morning when the whole family leaves for the airport and they decided everyone in the hotel has to get out of bed at 5 AM by slamming about 27 times the door to the room
As for the things to do and visit in the neighbourhood.
The old town of Heidelberg is certainly nice, but lots of the historical houses are occupied by outlets of the big fashion brands. We were more charmed by the really nicer and quitter old town in Speyer. Where you can visit the Dom and the Technik Museum.
Don’t miss the Sinsheim Auto & Technik Museum. And do make time for a visit of the fabulous Castle Gardens of Schwetzingen Castle.

We stayed here for 3 nights (4 days) and wished that we had stayed longer.
We travelled to Heidelberg by train and spent our first and last day looking around the town, leaving our luggage in the station lockers. It is worth a visit and there is much to occupy 2 full days. There is a local bus which goes from the station to the Kurpfalzhöfe hotel every 30 minutes and the journey takes 10 minutes.
The hotel is in a very peaceful rural hamlet, surrounded by fields. There is however, nowhere to eat in the vicinity of the hotel. This was not a problem for us as we ate a main meal at midday and took a picnic back for the evening and ate at the tables outside the hotel, and drank beer as we watched the sun set.
Our mode of transport for our stay was the super quality cycles lent f.o.c by Volker Mampel, the owner. The bikes were serviced daily and came complete with locks, lights and a roomy basket. Although Heidelberg is very hilly, the Kurpfalz area is really flat. The place is networked with bike tracks and Volker will lend a map, advise on places to visit and stop for food and drink.
The nearest town is Schwetzingen. This is only 10 minutes away by bike and is really worth a visit as there is a Schloss. The Schloss grounds were so interesting; there were cormorants and several herons nesting in one tree and loads of Egyptian geese and parakeets. The gardens were set out with flowers, statues and strange buildings. We then cycled a bit further to the Rhine and round a Nature Islands where there were wild pigs.
The next day we did a longer bike ride passing next to Hockenheim race track and on to Speyer, another town on the Rhine where there is an ancient cathedral and a silent but busy town owing to the lack of traffic. We did nearly 50 km, and nearly all of it was on very quiet roads. Occasionally we were on dedicated bike tracks and we crossed the river by Ferry. A fun experience.
We could have spent a week investigating the area by bike. It was really lovely. With car, there would be even more within easy distance.
The hotel was one of the nicest we have been in. It is light and very spacious- plenty of room for unpacking and surfaces to leave things. Bathroom was excellent. Everything was really clean, and furnishings and bed were good quality.
The breakfast needs a special mention. Volker does not do himself justice on his website. Not only is the breakfast choice extensive, it is also beautifully presented. The huge variety of fresh fruit (Strawberries, kiwi, melons, grapes, pineapple etc) is cut and displayed for you to help yourself–likewise the meats, cheeses and salad- it just looks beautiful. The bread (several varieties) is fresh and warm- and then eggs and bacon are cooked to your requirements.
Volker and his family spend time with each guest getting to know them and really doing all they can to make your stay enjoyable, and to make you feel at home. There is a fridge full of drinks (beer and soft) --you can help yourself and pay in an honesty box.
In summary –a brilliant place to stay- near so much, yet quiet and peaceful
Pros.
• Vokel and his friendly family,
• the breakfasts,
• the bikes
Cons.
• Rooms despite being enormous feel warm and airless at night- due I think to the roller shutters. I know that Volker is thinking of installing AC, but I think it only needs a fan to move the air a bit.
• No restaurant nearby, but we did not find this a problem and if you had a car it would not matter

We arrived here half-way on our long trip from Calais to northern Bavaria. A little tricky to find even with GPS. A friendly, modern and relaxed guest house. Our room was very clean and fresh. The breakfast was good and there was even a fry-up! The hotel has an interesting history in the farming community.
The owner was extremely helpful and had bikes for our use if we wished to go into town. The town was about 40 minutes walk along a footpath. Plenty of restaurants there and interesting to walk around. The journey back along that path was unlit so a torch would have been handy!
Quite close to Heidelberg, which we visited the next morning, which is certainly a most pretty place and worth spending more time.

Although I travel quite a bit and use review sites (mostly trip advisor) to plan my trips, this is the first time I have been compelled to write a review. Here is why:

Free loaner bicycles for guests. Nice bikes that are in great shape. Heidelberg is about a 15 min bike ride on nice paved paths through beautiful farmland. Heidelberg itself is very bike friendly. Schwetzingen with its palace, Speyer with its technical museum, and the Hockenheim motorsports track are all within an easy ride of the hotel.

For less that I would have paid for a standard studio type hotel room in the center of Heldelberg I had a beautiful apartment with a bedroom, study, living room and kitchenette. The dining area is very clean and very nice. The complimentary breakfast was a fine buffet of fresh breads, meats, cheeses, fruits, cereals, etc. Additionally, the owner was very happy to cook eggs to your liking with a side of bacon. There is a fridge in the kitchen stocked with beers and available to the guests. It was great fun to end a full day of conferences with a few beers on the patio with the owners and other guests.

Best of all was the owners who also run the hotel. They are very gracious and genuinely make you feel like you belong there and treat you like a friend of the family.

I loved staying there and plan on returning with my family.
