BoardingHouse Heidelberg
Reviewed July 3, 2009

I've stayed in what I thought were noisy places before, but this place sits at the top. My room is on the street (Rohrbacherstrasse), and while comfortable enough is so noisy. At the moment, because its hot, the windows need to be open (no air con), meaning the noise from the busy street invades the room.

In order to sleep at night you must shut the windows and lower the shutters, and then hope the fan in the room blocks out the noise of the front door buzzer, the slamming door, followed by clattering footsteps on the stairs.

That said, the hotel has a number of redeeming features: location, and very pleasant service. Its close the the main tourist/shopping area filled with lots of bars and restaurants, as well as being within an easy walk of the train station. You can take the tram to the station as well as there are two stops within 300 metres of the hotel.

I'd stay here again in cooler weather, but not in Summer again.

During my 3 weeks stay I had a very bad experience with noise. My room face the main street and we had a lot of problems with noise, if it's hot and you open the window, during the day you are not able to hear to TV, during the nigth you cannot sleep, if you close the windows, then , the room it's too hot(there's no AC) and the fan it's not enough for cooling the room, so you cannot sleep as well.
The rest is pretty good, the room is big and the little kitchen is very useful when travelling with children. The hotel is 5 minutes walking far from pedestrian street.
The room is very clean and very nice decorated.
There's parking available.
During weekends the room is not cleaned, only on working days.
If they install Ac this hotel would be perfect. In case I need to be here again, I will do it in winter.

I really wanted to like the Boarding House. They have tried hard to make it a stylish 'boutique 'style hotel but several areas need improving. Rooms are well furnished and very clean. If anything there is too much in the way of furniture eg. bookcases which are not necessary instead of enough comfortable chairs to sit on.The kitchen area is great when staying for more than 1 night. The room we had on the street was so noisy we couldn't have the window open but with high temperatures this meant we could not sleep. (No air-con either) The garden was nice but the furniture shown on the website was not there . Would have liked to have sat outside in comfort. Disappointing experience.

Each room features a kitchenette which was a nice surprise – but since we were only staying for a night we didnt get any use out of it. Its located in a surburban neighborhood 5 minutes outside of town. Parking is available on site but there are only really 7 tight spots and it costs 10EU a night.

Our rooms were clean and beautifully renovated. It felt very homey and the linens were nice and soft. We really liked the bathrooms as well - spacious and clean.

There isnt any breakfast available but they pack sandiwches for guests to take with them. The rooms themselves were really well-designed, extremely clean and comfortable. We would definitely stay here again if we visited Heidelberg– the price was fantastic!

This place was great: the rooms were spacious and clean and very elegantly decorated. It made me feel very comfortable. It was also very quiet...considering it is only a 10 minute walk at most from Heidelberg's main street in the altstadt! I could have seen my husband and I staying here for longer if we would have had the time. (Especially since each room is like an efficiency with a stove, microwave, refrig, etc.etc). The price was right too!

The only gripe that I have was the check in process. Maybe it is because I don't speak German very well, but no one seemed to tell me beforehand that if I check in after-hours (any day or time other than Saturday between 8-11am or something like this!), then I will need to call the owner to get a code to open up a safe with our key to inside the actual hotel and our hotel room door! We found all of this out when we arrived on a Saturday evening right before dark, and saw a sign on the back door with instructions *in German*. Since we are not living in Europe, we didn't have a cell phone handy...and so we had to go next door to a restaurant to borow the owner's cell phone --how nice of her to call for us, and to help us out.

Other than this initially confusing process, this place was a wonderful find. We would definitely stay here again: it added to our trip in Heidelberg and was well worth every penny spent. Kudos to the owners.

This review is several months late, yet I wanted to take the time to tell my fellow TripAdvisors of a great boutique hotel in Central Heidelberg. BoardingHouse is fairly new, with 17 rooms and my room had a small kitchen and refrigerator, handy for making coffee and storing your cold snacks and beverages. BoardingHouse also provided snacks and coffee in the room for purchase, and these items were not at all overpriced. I stayed in room 11, which was a single. I arrived after hours and the friendly staff left my keys to the front door and room in their outdoor safe. My first impression when I walked in the main door was "Wow..how cool is this place!" Dim lighting, warm paint colors, just great ambience. My room was plenty spacious and warm, the bath area very clean. Continental breakfast was juice and pastries, and you paid extra for this, but it was not needed as you are just a few short blocks to Heidelberg's main streets. This hotel is on a main street, but I did not hear any street noise at all, although my room did face the back. My room was an extremely affordable $60 USD and well worth it. I would recommend this hotel and I would absolutely stay here again if I found myself in Heidelberg.
