We took both the modern funicular to the castle and then the older one all the way to the top. Unfortunately it was a cloudy day so the view was quite limited. But there is a nice little museum at the top which describes the funicular history, as well as a small food and drink stand. Don't miss the funiculars!

If you are mainly wheelchair bound, you can access Heidelberg by the tram! You get a slight discount as well! There is a lift to the platform (need an attendant to access) and you get the first car.

It is NOT wheelchair friendly to the very top (Königstuhl) as this particular tram was built before 1900.

If you are on crutches and strong, this a pleasant stop.

If you are unable to hike upto the castle (its not for the feint hearted and attempt if you are used to walking lots) then use the funicular both ways. The funicular takes a few minutes both ways and is worth the few euros charge.

took this interesting route to the top of the mountain. Great trip and cracking views at the top, with a place foe a beer as well

Wether during snowy winter or sunny spring going up the mountain with such an historic funicular is a treat. The views from above are stunishing and the trip is short and quite pictoresc. Just a word of warning about the cues (in plural). First you wait to buy the tickets, then you wait to step into the funicular and in winter this can be a bit of a pain. Taking that aside, I would incoude this in any tour in Heidelberg.
