The Studentenkarzer was a student jail, operational from 1823 to 1914, where students were jailed for offenses such as rowdiness in public offenses that disturbed the public. Imprisonment could last from 2 days to 4 weeks. Life in the prison was considered comfortable and almost all students wanted to be jailed sometime during their college years as the days were spent playing cards or immortalizing themselves on the prison walls via poems of drawings. It is a great piece of history as all who were imprisoned there left their names and dates of their cell time on the walls or desks or beds, wherever they could leave their mark.
