Heidelberg Castle is/was an imposing structure...that was destroyed by both human and natural forces. Today, the architects and restoration experts work to preserve the "ruins." A worthy site to see...my only regret was the Francophobe perspective of our tour guide.

it is really not to be missed if you are in Heidelberg. Even in rainy day the view on the city was very nice. I have chosen to walk on top (not to take funicular). Once you are at the beginning of your route, there are two ways to reach the top, the right one with stairs and the left one without. If you are planning to visit only gardens, castles from outside without entering to the paid area, take the stairs. Otherwise if you take the way on your left you will reach courtyard first and would need to cross it to go to garden. Unfortunately I have chosen left way and at the end I have paid to enter the courtyard, which has a bit disappointed me. It is beautiful, but no info there, you don't get any map of something. I guess taking an audioguide may be good solution then

Worth the climb up. Lovely views and interesting to learn about the castles history. Nice to just walk around the grounds. Go early or late to avoid the crowds.

One of the very good castles in Germany. We managed to see it despite heavy rain.

Also the biggest wine barrel is a must see item.

Only bad thing is they allow to see some places if you take a guided tour which is not fair

First things first; we recommend you to buy Heidelberg card. You´ll have an opportunity to travel with trams, busses and funicular. You also get discount to museums etc.
Take the funicular to the castle and buy a audio guide from visitors center. If you want, you may take a guided tour, that also takes you to inside of the castle, but we found this audio tour quite enough for us.
Castle is an interesting mixture of different eras, nothing we ever saw before. Don´t let the fact that it is mostly ruined to let you think there in nothing to see. There is plenty! Pharmacy museum is worth of visiting and also the wine cellar. There you´ll find a bar and you may taste local wines and have a little brake go the tour. It took about 3 hours to walk around castle area.
Also great panoramic view of the town!
