“Must see when visiting Heidelberg”
Reviewed January 27, 2014

This was our second visit to Heidelberg Altstadt (Old Town) area. We stayed at the edge of Altstadt and walked everywhere. The old city is very pretty and you will see old hotels, restaurants, taverns, churches, and shops. It is large enough to have everything you could possibly want or need but small enough that you can walk around for hours and not get lost. There are some touristy things but it is a must see when visiting Heidelberg.

“The heart of the old town”
Reviewed January 26, 2014

Many century-old buildings, great restaurant and cafés and walking distance to most of the touristic points in the old city. Also you can buy souvenirs and beer in all the streets around this place.

“Very pictoresque”
Reviewed January 26, 2014

The old city is very pretty and the cobblestone streets really add to the atmosphere of walking among many old buildings. You can find among those builings centuries old hotels, taverns, restaurants, breweries and churches. Also there are a lot of shops for buying souvenirs, beers and fruits of the season.

“Small yet quaint”
Reviewed January 16, 2014

Another town where you don't need a map. Just walk and get lost. The location on the river is excellent. Also, cross the bridge. The view back to the castle is a classic.

“Some may say it's too touristy, but it seemed perfect to me!”
Reviewed January 16, 2014

Altstadt in Heidelberg is what I imagine a classic, German city to feel like. The timbered buildings, the cobblestone streets, the little shops and happy shopkeepers, the little cafes, the historic churches... I could go on and on. Avoid the restaurants closest to Marktplatz and walk a little further down the main street for a slightly less touristy experience. There's plenty to see along the way, including the Old Bridge (Alte Brucke), Rathaus, and several churches (Heiliggeistkirche and the Catholic Church of the Jesuits). The bustle of university students, shoppers, and sightseers makes the city feel alive!
