Owner description: The Old Town of Heidelberg starts from Sofienstrasse and brings you to the castle. In the middle there is the University Area (the oldest university in Germany), the main shopping street (Hauptstrasse) and it includes to famous Karl-Theodor-Bridge / the Old bridge.

Heidelberg is, as a city mostly over-rated. The shops in Mannheim are better (the castle there is magnificent to look at) and the historic town of Speyer has more flair and an impressive church (burrying place of many German Emperors), the Jewish bath, the Rhine, the town and a great technical museum for the techno people.

The best place to walk and feel the city is a long the altstrasse. a long street with nice shops and many places to see day and night time. at the end of the street are the Rathous and the marktplatz you can also walk near the old University there the first in Germany.

Wander round the old town and you will feel as if you have stepped back in time. Stop for some of the wonderful local beer and traditional food. People here are happy and helpful, and the setting is idyllic.

Unlike many old towns this is not just a tourist area although there are tourists for sure. This is a shopping area where people from business, school and tourists come together. They have done an excellent job renovating the area and keeping the old town feel. Not to miss are the churches you find along the way both on the main street and off on side streets.

We went to a Beer Garden near the old bridge and highly recommend it. Lots of locals. Schnooketoch is the name I have. An old pub inside and a garden of sorts outside. Great beer and wine and typical German fare.
