Having gone on a Saturday evening around 9pm with a group of friends (10 of us) in the hope of a last minute restaurant, we walked in here, and thought 'OK' they have tables, which weren't reserved. But the waiting staff did not want to serve us and said they had no space. When the tables were pointed out, they claimed they were reserved, but one had been reserved since 8pm and was clearly a no-show, so there didn't seem like a good reason not to seat us. But they were so reluctant, and when asked 'have you got no places or no desire to fit us in?' the waitress went ape-[--] and mouthed off. Would never go in there to eat again. With that attitude to their customers, they probably spit in your food.

Had dinner in the courtyard which is not particularly nice - looks like they are using up grandma's old garden furniture. Most of the dishes are accompanied by the "soup of the day" - which happened to be a beef broth with noodles, too bad if you happen to be a vegetarian. Any changes to the set menu of dishes (such as removing the soup, boiled potatoes instead of fried etc.) will be charged at one Euro each, which is not very customer friendly. The "extra large" salad that comes with the steak is medium-sized at most, the fish was very greasy and the white wine absolutely below standard, which is amazing because Heidelberg is supposed to be in a wine country. The Dachsenfranz beer was good, however.
Service staff were friendly, but not well organized - my boyfriend asked for the menu for a drink after dinner, and was served an Obstler without asking. Overall OK if you like old-style German food and are prepared to a bit of old-style German customer service attitude - you eat what's put in front of you, and that's it.

Went there for dinner once. The food was good, if you like traditional German cuisine (which I do!), with well cooked meat and an excellent pancake as dessert. However, the traditional part goes a little step too far in as much as they insist on having most main courses accompanied by a soup (which is OK), which is calculated as part of the cost, even if you ask them to remove the soup (which is not OK).
When we were there, the wait-staff seemed to be very rushed off their feet, with the corresponding drop in friendliness. Both were somewhat justified as all tables in the beer-garden were occupied and she was exceedingly busy, so no complaints there.
Overall, it was a good meal and a nice night out, although I wouldn't rate it as "very good". Tripadvisor needs an additional point between Average and very good!

Very nice place with typical atmosphere and a nice garden. However, better than the place itself is the food, which is FRESH. Try the salads and obviously the Schnitzel (I personally recommend the "Kalbschnitzel". Just very good traditional German food. The homemade Ice Tea in summer is also very good (although it has hard competition from the German beers which pours down nicely together with a Schnitzel...)
Definitely one of the best if not the best "Gaststätte" in Heidelberg!

If you are on a budget you might consider this place - it will fill your stomach, however, do not expect haute cuisine. They have - what they call - traditional German cuisine. However, it is incredibly fat and not entirely fresh. Salads are good. The price is OK, just don't expect a culinary experience.
