Description: Das Gasthaus Hotel Backmulde inmitten der Altstadt Heidelbergs lebt sowohl Tradition als auch moderne Kche.

Reviewed January 4, 2014

Restaurants in tourist traps like Heidelberg so often disappoint to it is a relief always to find one which takes its task seriously. Backmulde does that - it is a traditional German restaurant in an attractive old building. I like this kind of cuisine, which has strong roots in tradition but which also recognizes that things have moved on a bit, so is not as massive or as heavy as the food of yesteryear. We didn`t have a booking but were made most welcome. Wine list could be larger but is reasonably well chosen. You could sense that the local diners are happy to eat here, and in a tourist resort, that is always a good sign.

“Nice Quiet Place Close to Everything”
Reviewed June 26, 2013

I stayed for a three days nad I loved this thiss little hotel. The owner was helpful and friendly. The breakfast (which is included) was terriffic and served early. I did not eat at the attached restaurant, but it always looked busy. It was withing walking distance of anything you wanted to do in Heidelberg. It was relatively low price and I very much enjoyed my stay there. The wi-fi was a bit slow, but it did not detract form the experiance. Heidelberg itself is a beautiful place and I look forward to going back wtih my family. I will definitely stay here again.

“Worthwhile Bib Gourmand in Heidelberg”
Reviewed April 8, 2013 via mobile

This was our final meal in Germany, so we were hoping for greatness. (We did not get it)

The pea soup we had for appetizers was too salty, while the cod was good, and the lamb sausage and shoulder I had was very good.

I second all of the other TA comments - while this place is not of the meat and potatoes variety, the innovative local cuisine doesn't earn big marks, quite simply because German traditional cooking is quite boring no matter how much of a twist they try to put on it.

Southwest Germany likes to brag about all the Michelin starred restaurants it has - did anyone ever stop and look at the fact that these starred restaurants mostly serve French food? That is about as blatant an admission as can be made by the Germans that their traditional cooking cannot compare, and they know it better than anyone.

The place has Micheling Bib Gourmand recommendation. Was quite nice. Was really empty so the atmosphere was not the best.

“An amazing meal”
Reviewed March 6, 2013 via mobile

While attending a conference in Heidelberg, a group of us decided to take our hotel's recommendation and try this restaurant. It was a decision well made. In addition to the great company, the food was amazing and the staff so helpful. A magnum of a great wine paired well with our meal. The lamb shoulder and sausage was delicious, and the chocolate mousse was perfect. Not too sweet and it hit the spot..I highly recommend this cozy little easy.
