Description: Set sail! The 'sailors' at the Goldener Anker are fast and friendly - after weighing anchor it's time to head off to a sea of wine which landlubbers will love. The captain knows the lot - red, ros and white. The fine wines are well protected on high shelves (partly kept behind bars). The dining room has dark furniture, slate chalkboards, lamps which hang round down to seating height and fresh flowers. The 'galley' offers more than the usual sea biscuits - tapas being the operative word.

“One of my favourites!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2012

I really like this place and am surprised by a couple of the bad reviews I read. I have visited a few times over the last 18 months or so and have had consistently great food. This is not a cheap place and whether eating tapas-style dishes or a main, you can expect to pay around €17-25 per person just for this. Portions are OK but certainly not large. The wine selection is great and when you work the price (they charge retail plus corkage), I think the value is good for slightly more expensive wines. I gave the service 4/5 because I have found it to be friendly and helpful and bread and tap water (unlike some parts of Heidelberg, this area of town has really good tap water so I think it is a waste to drink bottled) are provided with no question or charge. The service is, however, slow. You have to go there ready to relax into a chilled evening with friends.

Overall, when I go here, I always have a pleasant evening with good wine, non-standard dishes prepared to a high standard, friendly staff and a nice atmosphere. However, if you want big portions, speedy service, and a huge selection of the usual dishes served in many places in Heidelberg, this is not the place to come.

“Horrible experience!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 10, 2011

I went there with an American friend for dinner. Food was OK, but don't expect much of a creative cuisine, it is pretty much same all same all. Interior is austere, just tables no table cloths and not much decoration. The most appalling thing that ever happened in my life in a restaurant - at some point this middle-aged (40-50) incredibly fat couple (man+woman) started screaming at us we should not laugh that loud any longer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! can you believe it? The place was empty, only one more table further down seated 2 people. And the waiter actually said NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!! I will for sure never go back - neither for the food, nor for the athmosphere! If I am not even allowed to laugh, then why bother going out?

This restaurant was recommended by our hotel. Great restaurant for typical German food and local beer. Very reasonably priced for the large portions.

“My favorite restaurant in Heidelberg”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2010

Consistently wonderful meals, wine, atmosphere, and service. I recommend the olives as a starter; they are fresh and overflowing with favor. The risotto is my personal treasure, but this is great restaurant and will satisfy diverse palates. Make reservations.
