“Great Hotel in Black Forest”
Reviewed October 4, 2013

We came to the Hotel Warteck for a 3 day stay so we could travel in the Black Forest and enjoy the sights. The service, rooms and hospitality of this hotel were outstanding. We had a room on the 2nd floor, but the stairs were not a problems. We did travel lightly, with only a small carryon each. Breakfast was superb, eggs to order, all kinds of bread, wurst, jams, etc. Loved every minute at the hotel. My only adverse comment and why I didn't give this hotel 5 stars, is there is no parking. Having to scramble for a space in an unknown town was a big disappointment for me. I did find the city garage , under the Markt platsz and that was where I parked most of the time.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher room with less road noise

Good value and comfortable hotel. No lifts but decent sized rooms. Description we read suggests it is just off main square but it was a little further than that. The food was excellent - with a great choice for breakfast. Be aware at dinner that the English menu contains only those items that are "stock" items on the menu - so worth looking at the German menu also to see if there are any dishes of the day that you fancy.

Freudenstadt itself is a quiet town but a nice enough place after a great drive over the black forest high road. We walked through the rose trail in the morning which was very pleasant

Our initial impressions were a little disappointing. We arrived to find the reception closed at 4.30pm on Friday and had to raise the proprietress from her house next door. We had a top floor room which was a long slog with bags up three flights of stairs with lights controlled by a timer. No help was offered with bags. The room was comfortable if a little old fashioned but light and spacious and with a big bathroom. However being on the top floor it was very hot and with no air conditioning we had to leave the windows open which meant a lot of traffic noise from the busy main street even though we were on a back corner. And somewhat worrying (and illegal?) there was no obvious fire escape. However, it was compensated by the charming town of Freudenstadt and the excellent restaurant. Certainly the best meal I have had in Germany and as good as some of the best in France. And yes there are some very good German red wines.

This was overall a good experience and a good value hotel

In particular, the good bits were -
- Our room on the 3rd floor was a really good size and very light, and felt good to be in. Slightly old fashioned furnishings, but no real issue there
- Good shower
- Room had a kettle - this is really normal in England but not on the continent - but did not supply any tea or coffee. However, we bought a pack of tea bags and some milk and it was easy to store milk in the minibar fridge. So we had good cups of tea - how very British!
- Breakfasts, with eggs cooked to order. Not quite the variety you would get in a bigger hotel, but good quality.
- location made it a useful base for exploring the Black Forest. Wasn't that struck with Freudenstadt as a town, but there are a number of reasonably priced places to eat, bars etc.
- Friendly staff

Downsides -
- Our room was on the 3rd floor with no lift, and up steep stairs. unlike one other reviewer, no one offered any help with bags and we really did struggle a bit. That didn't feel like a good start.
- Hotel is on a busy road, making parking a bit difficult. Also it was fairly noisy. That's fine with the windows closed as they are double glazed, but it was hot and there is no air-con, so it was noisy for us. For this reason, I was glad we were on the 3rd floor.

Room Tip: If you have a problem with climbing stairs, this would not be the place for you. But top floor room...

We were very pleased with our stay at the Hotel Warteck; comfortable rooms (a bit noisy with the Main Street right there), very close to the town center, and a wonderful restaurant. The staff was very pleasant and helpful, and the breakfast buffet was excellent.

Room Tip: Ask for one on the bak side of the hotel if possible; if you have to leave your windows open the roa...

Very much enjoyed our visit in Freudenstadt and our stay at the Hotel Warteck. It felt more like a bed and breakfast than a hotel. When we arrived, we were helped with getting our bags upstairs (no lift). We had dinner in the restaurant - one of the best meals we had in Germany. We had a corner room with wonderful light from all the windows. Would highly recommend the town and this hotel.

Great hotel a block from the square in Freudenstadt. The rooms are typical German with feather beds. Appointments are very nice with leather chairs. I needed to have some chino pants cleaned, rather than relying on the local cleaners getting them finished in one day on Friday, they offered to launder and iron them

The real PLUS here is the restaurant. One of us had white asparagus with Hollandaise sauce and "bacon" which was Black Forrest smoked ham sliced paper thin along with boiled potatoes. The other had breaded veal with the same side dishes. These were among the best meals we have eaten anywhere in the world. I cannot think of a meal I have had anywhere in the past 70 years that exceeded this for taste, quality, presentation and the pure joy of eating it. Dessert for one of us was lemon sorbet with berries and champagne, and for the other chocolate ice cream over black cherries with Kirschwasser. We are in heaven!

The Wartek is at least a MUST for dining and in our book a must for lodging.

Room Tip: Ask for third floor room. They are away from other guests and noise.
