Using the recommendation of Rick Steve's guide book, we had a relaxing afternoon at the picturesque restaurant. If you sit outside, make sure you are sitting under the umbrella of this restaurant, and not the close neighboring restaurant. Food was delicious, and fresh. We had sauerbraten (special for the day), ratsherrentopf and schweinemedaillon, and everyone was pleased with their choices. Salads were generous and made of fresh ingredients. And across the canal, a flutist/violinist entertained the afternoon with subtle music. Overall, goood food, good service, and ambience. Definitely recommend this restaurant.

We went here late one afternoon when temperatures were 33 +. We sat on the riverside terrace. The waiter was friendly and very informative about the wine list. We enjoyed local riesling and weiss burgander. Prices for the wine were perhaps a little higher than other establishment we visited but only marginally, but this was probably the best wine we encountered in Freiburg so worth the extra.

We ate, my husband had the sauerbraten which was marinated beef cooked slowly with spatzle. Absolutely delicious and not as heavy as it looks. Meat didnt need any cutting and melted in the mouth. I had the local dish with wild mushrooms from the black forest with Spatzle. Delicious creamy with lots of mushrooms.

I would revisit here and definitely recommend it. Just a shame they dont take reservations on the terrace. Inside the restaurant looked very chintzy with dark wood and would be great for a cosy lunch or dinner on colder days.

Recommended by Rick Steves. This by far had a nicer atmosphere than another RS recommended though a beautiful summer evening didn't hurt. Food was very good. My girls liked the cheese spatzle with the exception of the onions.

The outdoor seating is very nice and comfortable, except when it's cold which it was. But it was unpretentious and comfortable and the servers were all very accommodating to our family with young children. We had the steak on the special Spargal menu as well as the steak on the regular menu. It was quite good, a little on the lean side, so the garlic butter was a perfect addition. The kids enjoyed the tagliatelle with smoked salmon which was rich and creamy.

The only down side was when the bill came, I paid and asked for 5 euro back. The waitress seemed gracious, but then never returned with the change. I wasn't willing to wait or ask and figured it was a fine tip, but seemed a little rude to make your own decision about the tip size. Since I saw this had happened before, I wasn't surprised, but it doesn't seem quite right.

Also, the Sichelschmiede rents 6 rooms upstairs. It is a fair price of 85 euro per night for a double room and includes breakfast. The rooms are clean and very comfortable and the breakfast is hearty and satisfying, though nothing spectacular or special (salami, cheese, yogurt, soft boiled eggs, juice, coffee, cereal, bread). The overall feel of the rooms and restaurant is homey and comfortable with a slightly tight, cosy and cluttered feel. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating. The only downside to the room was that the noise from the hallway entered the room as though the walls/doors were paper. But with only 6 rooms this was not such a problem. They allowed us to keep our kids in a double room for no extra cost except 5 euros each for the breakfast.

When the weather is nice, this is an excellent place to sit outside, have a drink and enjoy some good German food. It is great for people watching as everyone passes by on the opposite side of the canal. Because of the alligator sculpture in the water nearby, many people stop here. The service was good, the food was good and the atmosphere excellent. Inside it is a historical mix of everything a Weinstube should be!
