Park Hotel Post
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 12, 2013

We had mixed feelings about the Park Hotel Post. It is listed as a four star and maybe it just makes the bottom end of that classification, but probably more like a three star. We reserved a double room with a view to the Colombi Park, which seemed the highest category in the booking system. The room was adequate, nothing exceptional about it, but probably our biggest concern was the hotel is not air-conditioned and it is on a busy, noisy street, it is the thoroughfare from the railway station to the city, and the noise levels kept us awake most nights until 4 am. The staff are really nice. The breakfast was fine, but in a fairly small room for the number of guests. The hotel is close to the city, a few minutes walk, and Freiburg is a lovely city to visit. Perhaps this hotel is among the best in Freiburg, but given the noise levels at night, we had mixed feelings about it.

This hotel is ideally situated in a relatively quiet cobbled side road, not very long, linking the Main Railway Station at one end with the Old Town area of Freiburg at the other. It’s the Old Town that we visited most, the edge of which is no more than 5 minutes on foot from the Hotel, so very convenient to get to.

If you arrive by car, then you’ll appreciate the secure underground car park (at a reasonable cost) which has windscreen wash facilities, bikes for guests and a lift to the upper floors. At Reception, you’ll be offered a welcome drink by a fluent English speaking staff member, after registration and an explanation on all and everything you ask for.

The Garage attendant took our bags up to our spotless room, which was very well decorated and furnished. Everything worked and, as ever in Germany, the quality of the fixtures and fittings, seems to nudge the rest of Europe towards the 3rd world. The quality double glazing shut out all of the outside noises. Breakfast was most enjoyable, although it is difficult to push the standard of a continental breakfast ahead of the pack. I do like an egg for breakfast but, all too often, the boiled ones turn out to be like bullets, and the scrambled egg I always treat as ‘suspicious’. Safer, then, to stick to the superb smoked hams and cheeses with a full variety of bread; this, after the usual variety of juices, yoghurts and cereals.

This is an excellent Hotel, which does not suffer from any significant faults to my mind. I would thoroughly recommend it and certainly use again. Well done everyone at the Park Hotel Post.. Just the ticket!

Room Tip: All equally good.

Decent hotel, not to expensive and close to all the action. The location is on the edge of the old town. This must be one of the nicest cities in the world. So pedestrian friendly, almost carfree center. The weahter was super hot, and no air condition made the sleeping expirence not that good. But friendly people working there. Rooms were decent. They had bikerentals and free refreshments in the lobby. Wonderful city

2 block from RR Station. Very pleasant room with nice bath but lacks toiletries. Helpful staff and attentive for breakfast. Tea/coffee served upon arrival. Light snacks out all day. A literary theme to the hotel serves up a lot of books and reading material in German. If you don't know how the crank works to darken the window, ask at the desk. Electric shutters close off the bathroom. It's quite pleasant with a large shower, blue floor and towels. Rm 354 sloped ceiling would make it difficult to get out of bed safely on the far side. No closet so clothes hang in the open but with plenty of hangers. Table and chair provided in addition to desk.

Room Tip: If you are a couple or tall, ask for a room without a sloped ceiling.

This hotel stands out for it's customer service. The ladies at the front desk went out of their way to make us feel welcome. They jumped right in and helped us with our bags and gave us lots of useful info on the area. We were offered drinks and snacks upon arrival as well as a bottle of water for the road when we departed - a large bowl of candies on the front desk was too tempting to pass up. We happened to be here on Easter and awoke to chocolate bunnies outside our doors.

The hotel is in a good location facing Colombi Park. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Each room highlights an author - the name is on a plaque by the door and a bio is inside the room along with their book. Rooms facing the street can be a bit noisy - especially on a Saturday night - rooms on the courtyard are quieter. Free wifi throughout the hotel.

The breakfast buffet is included in the room rate. We found the typical European meats, cheeses, breads and cereals - and also scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon. On-site parking is available in their underground garage for 9e. This was helpful for us as we had a rental touring van. Would definitely stay here again!

We stayed here for 2 nights during the Freiburg Marathon and did not fully know what to expect.
We had a double room which was a bit small as nearly only the bed fit in. The bathroom is the cleanist I had seen in a very long tim. Why? The showe head and water taps had no trace of limescale on them. I have not seen this in a very long time in any 4star or any other hotel in the last years. You received a welcome drink and more surprisingly a water bottle each for the trip back home! That is what I call a great service! Breakfast was good, nothing special but all was there. Staff are very friendly and you can rent bikes for free and a ebike for 15euros a day. As Freiburg is a cycle town it makes getting around easy too.
They have books everywhere that you can read, bios on the walls from authors and more. That is pretty much the lively decor they have even in the rooms.

Would we stay here again? Pretty sure though not for that price again, as I found it one inch to high.

Only a quick overnight stay, so not really long enough to give a balanced review.. However, I remember this stay for a few reasons including a great breakfast and very friendly staff. But what sticks out is on check-out myself and several other colleagues were all handed a bottle of chilled water for our long journey's home- something I had never seen before and for me reflects a hotel that thinks about it's customers. A quick stay but if I ever go back to Freiburg I immediately know where I will stay beacuse of those few little extras.

Just to add I was lucky enough to be in Freiburg near Christmas and the traditional markets were on....I have to say they were around a tenth of the size of the ones in Manchester and nowhere near as good!! So, Ironically- if you want German markets, forget the Black Forest head to Manchester ;-)!!
