This is a hidden gem! Just a few minuets from Calw. Look for the interesting statues by Peter Lenk along the road just a few meters past the turn-off. Double back to Hirsau and you'll find free parking across from the main gate. After visiting the Hirsau Kloster don't miss the Aurelius Kloster just down the road. Pick up the brochure at the Hisau Kloster giving directions to the Aurelius Kloster.

“Hamlet Hirsau, a must see”
Reviewed October 10, 2011

The complex consists of the monastery ruins, ruins of the Hunting lodge, and the Lady chapel (serves nowadays as protestant church). One of the most prominent Benedictine abbeys in Germany. 830 AD founded by Count Erlafried of Calw. 1082 begins with the construction of St. Peter and Paul, Hirsau monastery. 1091 consecration new Church and a year later the convent of Saint Aurelius moved to St. Peter and Paul. While preserving the monastery church, in 1474 the monastery was teared down and replaced in 1516 by Gothic buildings. 1536 The monastery was abrogated by seccularisation. 1630-1648 it became a monastery again, in 1662 rebuilt and renovated. Destroyed by French troups in 1692 as castle and monastery were burnt. First, however, mostly roofs were missing, until 1808 the masonry also disappeared, it was used for the reconstruction of Calw. Only the late Gothic Chapel and 37 metres high Romanesque Owl-tower remained preserved. Of Castle and calvary only walls remain, of Church and monastery only the foundations. The famous William of Hirsau, (abbot from1069-1091), introduced the Astrolab for measuring latitude position. Thus served the Hirsau abbey more than a millennium ago for geodetic purposes.
