This is the 5th or 6th time I have stayed at the Hotel zum Hirsch over the years. I've no doubt I'll be back in the future. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The breakfast each morning is a fantastic way to start the day. Very fresh, tasty and a large variety of food, something for all tastes.

The location is probably the best hotel location in Baden Baden. Walking distance to anything you could want, the opera house, parks, shops, restaurants and of course the heavenly baths.

This hotel occupies a beautiful building that has benefited from extensive renovations and is, apparently, the oldest in Baden-Baden. I had a superior room, which was exactly that – spacious, comfortable, quiet, nicely appointed and with a lovely bathroom. The view into a narrow backyard was not terribly appealing but that is what you get in an old warren-like city where buildings are situated quite close to each other. It should not distract (and neither should my points below!) from the fact that the hotel offers excellent accommodation made all the more rewarding by top-rate staff.

There were a few minor niggles that are perhaps more a matter of personal preference than anything else.

1.) Wi-Fi = it’s available but only really workable on the ground (the lounge) and first floor. In my room on the fourth floor it was so slow it made for a nostalgic trip down memory lane when computer power was measured in kilobytes.
2.) Strangely, there was no info in the room about the hotel or the area. Everything from advice on quickest routes to restaurant bookings could be had from the ever helpful reception staff – but why make additional enquiries a necessity rather than a choice?
3.) The hotel restaurant is only open for a few hours during the day and the bar on the ground floor did seem to be closed permanently. Also, any cigar aficionado who might be tempted by the presence of the Davidoff Lounge will be sorely disappointed. Germany, too, has been gripped by the smoking ban so that the only thing you will find in the large humidor is the dust that is slowly gathering.
4.) I have seen bathrobes, slippers and washcloths in lesser hotels and have no idea what kind of economising drive these items might have fallen victim to here.
5.) Equally, I have seen more lavish breakfast buffets, especially in Germany and at these prices. A bit more luxury wouldn’t go amiss.

I haven’t tried any other hotels in Baden-Baden but would say this is a safe bet and very much worth a try.

I used to stay in European youth hostels a lot when I was younger. The German ones were so good that I wondered how good their hotels must be. Now I know that ,if this is any guide, they are superb. This hotel is very central so handy for the concert hall, the spa, the casino if you are tired of having so much money and some of the best chocolate shops in Europe. The staff are excellent, friendly, polite, helpful and multilingual. The breakfasts were so good it was tempting not to bother visiting anywhere else. There must be something wrong with it but I can`t think what it is. Even the price was reasonable.

Room Tip: The only tip I can think of is `book early`. It`s bound to be popular.

I stayed at the hotel for 2 nights whilst on business in nearby Buehl.
The reception staff were very friendly and helpful and the buffet breakfast was lovely and plentiful.
It was a shame the restaurant was not open in the evenings, however, they can order takeaways from a nearby Italian and there are plenty of good places to eat nearby.
The room was very comfortable and quiet and the free WIFI is a necessity when travelling on business.
I would return again.

Some trepidation with the reviews. That being said this was a perfect stay. Easy access to the entrance even though a pedestrian zone.( 20 min. Parking at the hotel while registering.). Pleasant desk staff. Rooms were A+++++. Would have been nice to have coffee service in room. Ultra nice bathrooms. Great breakfast. Loads of nice nearby dining options. Great Spa. This is not a full service hotel but a nice upscale hide-away. If you want room service, bellmen, a big bar there are options in Baden-Baden. Will not hesitate to return....especially in off season.

Overall I thought this was a really good hotel. The main things it absolutely got right: before we arrived for New Year we had excellent service from the staff in helping us to book a table for dinner; our junior suite was large and the bathroom was huge; the bed was really comfortable and the shower was good; our room was so quiet we kept wondering if we were the only guests; and the breakfast was a very-well stocked buffet . But it really lets itself down on the details: the decor feels like an eighties rendition of old-world charm - this is really not helped by the lack of a single picture anywhere in the hotel; the spa bath in our room was huge, but I only realised the tap in the bath was spa water because I read it in a review in our guide book, nobody told us and it wasn't on any of the literature in the room; the towels in the bathroom were some of the most measly I've ever had in a hotel - literally one small hand towel and one fairly small bath towel each - and these were very far from fluffy or luxurious, completely out of keeping with the room. I realise these may sound like very pernickety comments but when the core substance of a hotel is so good it seems a shame that it is let down by things that could be so easily fixed. Nonetheless, this is a very good hotel and I would stay again. I just wish they'd put a little bit more care into some of the details.

First thing to know is driving to the hotel is complicated and parking is more so. This should be noticed to guests by the hotel prior to arrival. The hotel is situated in a pedestrian shopping zone and is a good location if arriving by train or bicycle. For those on a car trip, you are advised at check in to drive 20 minutes, through a tunnel, back around to the mall parking garage. There is no option of valet parking and no one to assist with bringing bags. For us, we can manage, but for older or less active people, we cannot see how this would have been done.

The hotel itself is an elegant, old-European style, with sizable rooms, nice bathrooms and furnishings reminiscent of a comfortable, but sparsely decorated 19th century home, with absolutely no wall hangings. One of our rooms had a nice balcony overlooking a courtyard, the other faced an outside walkway. Both were quiet at nighttime and both had mini-bars with modest selections. Breakfast was served in a pleasant room and the buffet had nice selections, albeit the usual eggs, meats, and such.

Oddly, there seemed to be a skeletal staff working and all restaurants and bars were closed in the evening. Although the lobby bar may have been on an honor system, that was never explained and we only saw a staff person near the bar once. Those that were working did not seem friendly and merely going through the motions. Our stay was during Christmas markets and two nights before new year, so while the hotel was seemingly well-occupied, the lack of staff made the stay seem like something from a Stephen King novel. The same woman who checked us in, also seemed to respond to housekeeping calls, and seemed to be manning the lobby bar at one point. This is not a small B&B, but a really large hotel, so the lack of staff and activity was eerily quiet. Some music or ambience would help a lot.

There wasn't much effort at accommodating us or making us feel welcome. We asked for one of our two rooms to allow an extra hour for check out so we could return from the thermal pools and change before our return to the road, but this was fairly summarily denied, even though we were condensing into one room and asking for only one hour.

Ultimately, the hotel has good points of being in the shopping district and near the thermal spa, so big plus once you're outside your car. But overall, the experience was odd.
