“Water and History”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 27, 2012

Maybe it is not the best water, but it is healthy and famous since centuries.

Think about wellknown guests and friends of Baden-Baden: Johann Strauß, Clara Schumann, Richard Wagner, Erich Fried, Marlene Dietrich, Paul Hindemith, Bertha von Suttner, Robert Koch, Iwan Sergejewitsch Turgenjew, Queen Victoria of England

Watch the scenes of historic events, and enjoy this great place, maybe more than once.

“Not worth visiting”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 19, 2012

This is a long hall with faded pictures of the local history and some explanations in German language. There is also the tourist office and a nice cafe.

“great bar”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 21, 2012

This place was gorgeous. The service was great, the ambiance wonderful, and the drinks tasty. I always drink gin and tonic and the adorable bar tender suggested I try a local gin with 47 herbs and it was, indeed, fantastic. Highly recommended. Pretty empty until later at night.

“An oasis of calm, with great coffee & strange paintings.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 9, 2012

The original function of this splendid neo-classical building was to allow visitors to Baden-Baden to 'take the waters', that is to drink the mineral waters guaranteed to cure a whole panoply of ills. You can still, do this, of course, though I'm not sure quite what they would do for you.

Better to head over to your left, to the splendid, and often nearly deserted coffee-house where, as in Vienna and Budapest, you will find, not only excellent coffee and pastries, but a range of newspapers (including the Times, Financial Times and Herald Tribune) hanging from a rack next to the window with its splendid views over towards the Casino.

While inside the main room of the Trinkhalle you can consult the friendly Tourist Information people and (if your hotel or guesthouse has done its duty to you) exchange a tourist voucher for reduced price entry to the Caracalla Therme baths.

But don't leave the premises without admiring the range of paintings adorning the facade. There are a good fifteen of them, each depicting a local legend. For people who can read German there is a detailed explanation below each painting. But I much preferred the more imaginative versions of the legends which my wife Jane came up with, despite or possibly because of not speaking a word of the language.
