“Great experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 5, 2013 via mobile

We decided on the traditional baths of Friedrichsbad (instead of Caraculla family friendly clothed format) and as others have stated, once you are naked and sitting on the lounges in the first steam room, you don't really give it a second thought. We went on Sunday, combined facilities day so men and women together and it is a very liberating experience to share with your partner. By far the natural minerals steam room and body scrub were the highlight for me, but I actually enjoyed it all and like others, promptly went to sleep once I was tucked into the blanket in the relaxing room. You need to keep an eye on the clock at all times though as time is lost as you float away within these baths.

“Worthwhile and totally different experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 1, 2013

Friedrichsbad has mixed usage on certain days, so the more reserved might want to choose carefully which day to go. Fans of Japanese baths and hot springs (ofuro and onsen) should like Friedrichsbad though.

As mentioned by previous reviewers, Friedrichsbad is designed with 15 to 17 stations, signposted with arrows and the amount of time one is recommended to stay at each station. Some of the signs were not very clear as to how to get to the next station but there is usually a (friendly but brusque) staff around to nudge you the right way and explain how to use the facilities. If one gets lost and jumbles up the sequence it is no big deal.

Friedrichsbad is organised with typical German efficiency (well thought through layouts of locker rooms, showers, lotion rooms, signs etc). Some free spirits might find this sort of spa experience a bit too regimented.

The soap and brush massage was interesting. The most unique parts of the spa were probably the natural steam room and marble interiors and high ceilings of certain pools, which gave a definite sense of history. The cold water pool (18 degrees celsius) was hard to get into but delivered a post dip invigorating tingle to the skin. The jacuzzis did not have strong bubbles but coupled with the warm water were very comfortable.

“Gorgeous Old World Spa experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 18, 2013

Affordable luxury - for €35 you get 3.5 hours in this Old Wold spa, plus a soap brush scrub. If you're not cool with nudity, you can go to Caracalla next door but it's less "traditional". Friedrichsbad is all naked, all the time. Honestly, after 5 seconds you really won't even care - most people are older or fatter than you and you'll never see them again anyway.

You arrive and divest yourself in a locker room. My visit happened to be on a "segregated" day where men and women are separate except for 2 rooms. Most days, it's co-ed. Once you're in the buff, you go through a series of 17 stages, all well marked with recommended times and directions in English.

You start with a shower (gorgeous rainfall style), then sweat in 2 dry air rooms. Then shower again, and get scrubbed down with German efficiency and thoroughness. Another shower - then to the damp sauna rooms with eucalyptus steam. Then comes a series of soaks in various pools (the best parts IMO). Finally, the freezing cold plunge if you dare - I did and it was COLD!!!

Warm up with hot towels, lotion up, and get wrapped up like a mummy for some r&r. You'll emerge cleaner and more relaxed than you ever thought possible. I have bad hips and this vacation's uphill hikes had been kicking my behind - 3 hours here made me feel human again.

My tip - you can spend as long as you want in any of the rooms as long as you stay within your allotted time. If you aren't into the the sitting around at the end, feel free to cycle back to your favorites.

I had read the reviews and really wanted to experience the baths. I had to really gear up for the nude experience but was prepared. We went on a day that my husband and I were separate but we did meet in the pool near the end. It was relaxing and I would do it again.

“Spa experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 10, 2013

I pretty much agree with all the positive comments people made on this spa and my husband and I enjoyed this experience immensely. We went on a co-ed day. Our only complaint would be that while it is worthwhile and enjoyable to have the soap, scrub massage, we found it not very relaxing as the attendant is constantly talking and stopping your massage as they are directing people who have not paid for a massage to the next room and telling those people who do have a massage, where to go to wait till they call you. This is a very busy station in the many steps you go to. I felt of all the stations in the spa that this would have been the quietest but it ended up being the busiest and the loudest. Your laying there and people are looking over at you laying there while they are assisting others. Loved the spa, but as for a relaxing massage, I would pass. P.S. we were also there on a weekday and it was not overly busy at all, can't imagine on a real busy day.
