Nice area about 40 mins from Baden Baden town centre on the bus 245.
Lake was frozen when we visited.
Had a great piece of cake in berghotel restaurant.

We got up there at 16:30 and the weather was very rough, however the lake was frozen and gave a certain vibe that made the weather appreciate-able. The restaurant and souvenir sh op were still open and they both have the best goodies from food to handmade Black Forest watches. A must see for the Black Forest travelers.

Going to Baden-Baden black forest is really easy. We travelled from Karlsruhe to the highest point of Black Forest (Hornisgrinde) through the beautiful road of Schwarzwaldhochstraße . The route was as follows:
1. Take TagRegio RegioPlus ticket for 19.1 euros – It is valid for 7 Waben (states) and it is valid for 5 persons.
2. Take RE train from Karlsruhe Hbf to Baden-Baden Hbf. Alternatively you can also travel in the tram that you can get from the Karlsruhe HBF (just outside the HBF there are many trams going). Your RegioPlus ticket is valid for this, so you do not have to incur extra cost.
3. Once you get down at Baden-Baden Hbf (Train Station), take the bus 245 from Baden-Baden Hbf. You can get the bus outside the Baden-Baden Hbf. Only weekends, generally there is one bus per hour. Again you don’t need to buy the separate ticket.
4. If you want, you can buy something to eat or drink from the Baden-Baden Hbf as there is no market or shop at Hornisgrinde (highest point of black forest). Be prepared that it would be more cold at the top, so take appropriate clothing with you.
5. The bus 245 will drop you at Mummelsee where there is a Lake Mummelsee and you can travel to the top Hornisgrinde. Also, you can have a good walk around the Lake Mummelsee.
6. When you come back, you have to pay 1 Euro per person (I don’t know why) in the bus but that is really cheap.
7. I recommend to reach their in morning before 12 pm, if you want to spend some time and enjoy.

Visiting mountain lakes in winter is usually reserved to skilled hikers, but Mummelsee is a place you can discover with all your family, whatever their ages are. You can walk around the lake in just 15' and visit the huge gifts shop or the restaurant by the piers, where in summer you can rent a boat and cross the lake looking for the mermaids and the ghosts of the mountain waters.
But it was a cold December and the lake was partly frozen, what allowed my son (a grown teenager) to walk on the shore and stand on the frozen water.
The walks are suitable for all ages, from children to adult hikers, leading to the upper parts of the Schwarzwald. The view on the Rhein valley are really impressing, unless it's covered by a thick coat of fog like the day we visited it.
