If you visit for the spa's and don't see this castle you are missing out. They let you go all the way to the top! They also have rooms available for 76/86 euro a night which offer a great view. The accomodations are very modest so no TV or internet but offers a peaceful night with a very relaxing breakfast in the morning. The castle itself is very cool and is definitely one of the most memorable places I have visited in Germany.

A good walk up to the castle. Entry is free to the castle ruins and there is a nice cafe/restaurant before you set off back.

If you are in Baden-Baden to get some fresh air and a bit of exercise, let the Alt Schloss be a part of your plans. You have a few choices of ways to get to this building. The best for you depends on the level of exercise you want. Your choices are:

1) Walk to the castle from the center of town. This means you walk all the way up to it on a nice path. This gives you the most exercise and fresh air. Maybe bring a lunch or a little food/water for along the way. Monitor the weather, too.

2) Drive part way up the hill and hook up with the path in progress. Note that once you are in the hills/trees you'll have to read little sign post markers to help you find the way to the top. Bring a map if you think you might get lost. It is a bit tricky, which is part of the fun. The trip is NOT spoon fed to you with big huge signs. There are little sign/markers and they are there to help guide you.

3) Drive all the way to the castle and park there. Then you can climb around on the ruins as you want. There is ALSO a path around the top of the hill that actually starts at the castle, does a circle/ring and returns you to the castle. This "nature" path is relatively flat, so you don't have to hike uphill too much (as you do if you come from the center of town, which is down in the valley).

It's a beautiful view from up there... and the air is pure and clean.

East to get to; great setup to see entire castle; no entry charge; terrific restaurant inside; nearby trails provide outstanding views over entire city.

This "Alter Schloss" is a must for all Baden-Baden guests. The visit is free and the castle is very well preserved.
You can climb to the top of the castle and a nice view over the Rhin valley comes in front.
We drove there, but you can also rent a bike to climb.
Don't forget to stop for a bite in the restaurant near the castle. You won't regret.
