We very much enjoyed our trip on the steam train - especially having been booked into "First Class" which gave us the benefit of upholstered seats! (Others are wood slats).
We traveled through beautiful countryside and across bridges that provided 'helicopter like' views of countryside, ravines, and villages that are truly stunning.
Refreshments are available en route and staff were very pleasant.
I think you have to have an interest in railways, transport history or things mechanical to get the best out of the attraction and some prior research would be beneficial for the railway takes a journey of 25km to travel an A to B distance of less than 10km! As German language is used both on the journey & in the museum prior research is a good investment as you will get much more from your visit.

We took this trip while on holiday in the Black Forest but was somewhat disappointed as lots of the time was spent traveling through tunnels and any scenery was obscured by trees and bushes close to the line.

Train enthusiasts and history buffs will love a trip on the Schwarzwaldbahn double decker see Wiki for details). The line is an engineering marvel and even for seniors just a truly great and scenic relaxing ride. Great views either up or downstairs. No reserved seats. As people come and go you can change seats at will -- just do so before arriving at the next station. Schoenes Wochenend (weekend) ticket only 39 Euros for up to 5 people! Our trip is usually Baden-Baden to Konstanz around 3 hours so brings snacks and drinks. With hourly runs, there's time to get off, enjoy the lake, eat at a nice restaurant and return. We've done variations via connecting boat to Mainau or Meersburg (plan ahead at Die Bahn for round trip Bahn-Schiff-Bus times and routes). We've spent the night in Konstanz Hotel Centro right across from the Bahnhof. One March we enjoyed snow at the higher elevations. Triberg Waterfall is a good stopover but beware of stairs and very steep uphill walks that seniors might want to skip. May 14/15, 2011 we took this trip: 7:30 lv Baden-Baden 10:16 arr Konstanz- walk north to stairs at end of platform down under traks and turn right to harbor about 10 minute walk-11:12 boat to Stein Am Rhein arr 13:25- overnight at Hotel Adler. 8:30am taxi or 10 min brisk across river uphill walk to Stein am Rhein Bahnhof (buy ticket day before or early and be sure to validate on platforn) 9ish train to Kreuzlingen Hafen- short 8 min stroll to harbor to catch 10:45 boat to Mainau arriving at 11:25. Finally lv Mainau by bus around 4pm back to Konstanz Bahnhof to catch Schwarzwaldbahn back to home base. What a ride! Enjoy!
