“A treasure not to be missed”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 15, 2008

I have travelled in and around this part of France for many years, but had not visited the gallo-romaine museum and site at St Romain-en-Gal until November this year, 2008. This can be explained by the fact that this wonderful site does not appear to be well publicized

The museum is one of the best of its kind that I have ever visited. The museum building itself is architecturally impressive and enables the amazing exhibits to be shown off to their best advantage.

The museum staff were welcoming and well informed and, as a bonus, English speaking.

English audio guides for the museum and archeological site are available free of charge. These guides, not only describe the exhibits but bring to life the society and trade of this important city of the Roman Empire in France.

An added bonus to the marvels of the museum and site is the restaurant, L'Entre Deux, we had lunch there between visting the museum and the site. this restaurant is comfortable with good service and good food at reasonable prices.

“A Roman Town comes to life”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2008

This site just across the river from Vienne France gives one an excellent experience as to what a Roman City looked like. Inside the Museum there are artifacts that have been found on the site. The descriptions are available in all languges and let you move along at your own pace. Once outside on the actual "dig" you get to experience a walk in the Roman city with many aids to help you visualize the buildings as well as walking the exact roads that the Romans did, two thousand years ago. The tour is so extensive that it can take all day to see it thoroughly. Fortunately there is an excellent restaurant Les Entre Deux, on the property to help break up the day and let it all sink in. A must see in the area even for those with a passing interest in Roman history.

“Ancient Rome”

Having friends in Vienne, I have visited there many times. The city itself is worth a visit, charming and old style. Wonderful Roman ruins throughout the town and other sites that make a day delightful.

Across the river is my favorite, the site of an old Roman city from when France was still Gaul. Though the buildings are of course not standing, the entire town is laid out with the foundations of each building in situ. Just walking along the streets gives you a chance to imagine what the town was llike. There also is a fantastic museum with tons of mosaics from the town and other great exhibits.

I spent the whole day here, but I guess it could be done in a half a day if you did a quick tour. A really wonderful experience for any Roman history buff, or just those interested in the past. And again, the town itself is a great place to visit.
