“Non-smoker's beware”
Reviewed March 5, 2011

This was the second year we had stayed in this hotel. It is dated but reasonably priced and with a very good location for the price. So we came back this year with friends and their kids. The hotel is apparently under new management. No obvious differences except this year our room STUNK of cigarette smoke. We complained. They were sorry. The previous occupants had ignored the requests to smoke only on the balcony and French law meant that they had been powerless to do anything about them. We were given an "odour destroying" spray to use around the room. It achieved nothing. We went to bed and the duvet, pillows and matresses stunk. We complained again and insisted the duvet, pillows and blankets were swapped. The smell improved but was still bad enough to hit us in the face when we walked into the room and meant we did not want to be in there except when we had to go to bed. We complained again and asked for a discount on the peak rates we were paying. A meagre discount was offered. We were told 10 rooms in the hotel had been similarly affected but no one else was complaining like us. They said the hotel is NOT non-smoking so the law says they can't stop people who insist on smoking in the room. We were told we were obviously hypersensative to cigarette smells (an apology for that remark was later offered to our friend) and that we should have contacted the hotel in advance to say we didn't like cigarette smoke so they could have known to allocate a different room in advance! We didn't move out only because we were there with friends (and their rooms were fine). In the end when we checked out a better discount was given and accepted. But for this problem the stay would have been fine.
THE MORAL - if you are a non-smoker and object to paying what is a lot of money (although less than elsewhere in the village) to stay in a room than stinks like an ashtray either don't book here or take them at their word and tell them when you book that a room that has been used by a smoker is not acceptable to you. They clearly have taken the decision that they are happy to risk the smells and keep the smoker's happy rather than ban smoking throughout the hotel. ALSO - They said the inability to stop smoking in the rooms applies to any French hotel which is not entirely non-smoking. So we will consider that as an issue with any French hotel we book in future.

We stayed over Xmas & New Year in 2008. We wanted to be in Val for 10 days so staying in a chalet just wasn't possible. We stayed here as it was 'budget' but still cost over £200 per night.

The location was excellent but this is a seriously dated hotel - it looks like a throwback from the '70's.

Breakfast is very limited - hope you like bread & eggs because that's about all that's available.

The chap on reception was very nice & helpful.

Would rather spend the extra (as we did on our next stay to Val) then come back here.

Just had a fabulous week's bed and breakfast at the Danival. We had a quad room which had amazing views over the piste, a full-sized bath, plenty of hot water and even a useful little kitchenette. It was right on the piste and the Christmas firework display was just a few feet from the balcony. The hotel was genuinely ski to the door. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful - particularly when my son's ski boots were stolen or taken by mistake on Christmas Day. (There is a heated boot rack in the basement which is obviously not 100% secure.) The breakfasts provided boiled eggs, delicious croissants and fresh fruit every day. There was limitless hot chocolate - also available at tea time. The underground car park was also very useful. Considering the eye-watering prices of most things in Val d'Isere this hotel was a real bargain.
