Stayed here the second week in February and enjoyed the stay. Firstly the negatives; the rooms though clean are not large and are looking a little tired with no television or tea facilities. These are basic rooms and those that look out over the car park can be noisy with waiting buses and passing people, those looking over the slope are apparently much quieter. Guests are a mixture of couples with the odd lads group. These groups can be raucous, though the younger ones tended to be far better behaved, and if the hotel had too many of these it could be an unpleasant place for a couple to stay. The bar is small, cannot accommodate all the guests and can get crowded, prices are reasonable for the area. The restaurant is not able to accommodate all the guests and you alternate between an early and late sitting; I honestly did not find this a problem but some may.
The Champs is really a three star place to stay, but is lifted to four stars thanks to the outstanding young staff, who are friendly, helpful and attentive. You cannot but help be impressed with how hard these young people work to make your stay as agreeable as possible. The managers we encountered were pleasant, professional and helpful. The meals provided were superb, with an excellent breakfast, satisfying tea and a truly outstanding dinner. The quality and quantity of the evening meal could be favourably compared with accommodation costing twice the price. The Champs is not a ski-in-ski–out but the ski lifts are close, a short walk on a flat surface and it is also close to an excellent free bus service that can take you on to other lifts. A problem with our room had a fast fix by maintenance and a private skiing lesson the hotel arranged with a local ski school was excellent and very good value. To sum up, Champs is three star accommodations with five star food and staff. Enjoy your stay!
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- In common with the rest of Val d’Isère’s La Daille area, the hotel might not win any awards for the cutest or prettiest exterior in the Alps, but as with all properties, it is the location that really counts! And that’s where the Champs Avalins really scores. You can ski back to within just 50m of the hotel, and each morning you have a choice of lifts right on hand to whisk you up the mountain. ... more less
