“Average accommodation with good food, staff and location.”
Reviewed February 16, 2014

Stayed here the second week in February and enjoyed the stay. Firstly the negatives; the rooms though clean are not large and are looking a little tired with no television or tea facilities. These are basic rooms and those that look out over the car park can be noisy with waiting buses and passing people, those looking over the slope are apparently much quieter. Guests are a mixture of couples with the odd lads group. These groups can be raucous, though the younger ones tended to be far better behaved, and if the hotel had too many of these it could be an unpleasant place for a couple to stay. The bar is small, cannot accommodate all the guests and can get crowded, prices are reasonable for the area. The restaurant is not able to accommodate all the guests and you alternate between an early and late sitting; I honestly did not find this a problem but some may.
The Champs is really a three star place to stay, but is lifted to four stars thanks to the outstanding young staff, who are friendly, helpful and attentive. You cannot but help be impressed with how hard these young people work to make your stay as agreeable as possible. The managers we encountered were pleasant, professional and helpful. The meals provided were superb, with an excellent breakfast, satisfying tea and a truly outstanding dinner. The quality and quantity of the evening meal could be favourably compared with accommodation costing twice the price. The Champs is not a ski-in-ski–out but the ski lifts are close, a short walk on a flat surface and it is also close to an excellent free bus service that can take you on to other lifts. A problem with our room had a fast fix by maintenance and a private skiing lesson the hotel arranged with a local ski school was excellent and very good value. To sum up, Champs is three star accommodations with five star food and staff. Enjoy your stay!

Room Tip: Try to avoid rooms facing car park.

Situated in La Daille this is a basic chalet style hotel but that should not worry you as the staff, food and atmosphere are exceptional. The service given by the very hard working staff is genuine, the food is varied, home cooked and well presented. Great value for money. The only down side is the bar, which is very small and noisy. Don't let that spoil your stay because everything else will enhance it. Warm spotless bedrooms with an adequate bathroom, if you get the chance ask for a room facing the slopes, which are only a couple of minutes walk, the rear of the hotel gets a bit noisy early in the morning.

- Bus service outside every 5 minutes in the day, then 10/20 mins in the evening until 0240.
- Great super helpful staff
- Amazing food at breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner
- Rooms kept immaculate and tidy. Loads of storage space for clothes and cases

This hotel has everything you need and is great value for money in a great location. Val d'Isere is an amazing resort, suited to intermediate and advanced skiers / boarders with some of the best off piste!

The Champs Avalins is a basic ski Chalet hotel with no frills however, the dining and kitchen facilities are not big enough to cater for all the guests in one sitting hence the early/late dinner arrangement which is explained fully in the hotel info so be aware prior to booking. The split bar is also a bit on the small side where the pre dinner canapés and after dinner cheese & biccies are served to try and relive a bit of pressure on the main dining room. During dinner times there is nowhere in the hotel to relax apart from the bar (sometimes very crowded) or your room.

Some rooms can be a bit noisy in the early hours when the snow ploughs/bin lorries get going.

Now, onto the positives....... Firstly and most importantly, IGNORE COMPLETELY the review of Soon2beUTA of Jan 2014. Why T.A have allowed this to be published I do not know as it breaches their own guidelines of avoiding personal insults and this appears to be a 90% personal attack on Francesca (if it were true isn't it odd that this is the only one!??). As a retired manager myself, I witnessed on a few occasions that Francesca is a polite, considerate but firm and efficient manager, respected by guests and staff alike. Her managerial abilities are reflected in the generally excellent feedback re the hotel staff.

Room cleanliness and tidying was excellent.

Food choice and quality provided by the small but enthusiastic kitchen team was fantastic and of a standard that many restaurants in the U.K cannot match (and I'm a very fussy eater!!)
Wine of the usual standard but you can pay extra to get the nicer stuff.

Staff......what a nice bunch of young people...... polite, friendly and above all enthusiastic to make guests as comfortable as possible...........................10/10. The entire staff, from Manager to Kitchen Porter came across as a well run and professional team.

So, to conclude, it's basic with limited facilities but warm and clean. Located only about 100 yds from the nearest lift or 200 yds to the main funicular. Regular buses into the main village with stop not far from front door. Food great, staff great and yes I would go back as it represents pretty good value for money.

Room Tip: Request a room least affected by noise from the main road,

Hotel is very basic but right beside ski lifts that are quiet. Very few queues for lifts even in the morning. Bus service into Val d'isere town centre is very efficient and runs well into the early hours. All the staff at the hotel were very welcoming right from the first meeting and couldn't do enough to help you all week. All you had to do was ask. Nothing was too much trouble. They made our stay very pleasant!! A small number of the other guests did give some of the staff a hard time which was totally uncalled for (sad to see really) as they were genuine happy, cheerful, helpful, normal everyday people, who in my opinion were doing a very good job. They wanted to make sure all the guests thoroughly enjoyed their stay - we certainly did thanks to them. Well done to the staff! Thanks for a great holiday!! Keep up the outstanding work!!!!

We stayed at the champs with ski total over the Christmas week (family of 4 with two teenage boys) and whilst the hotel is pretty basic I just want to say a hearty thanks to Francesca and the team for all their efforts especially the effort made for Christmas dinner which was fantastic. Also a special thanks to Joey and Jonny.

Yes the hotel is basic but food was great, lots of hot water and good views of the piste and lifts if you pick the right rooms. Rooms were clean and the location is good at the bottom of the Daille lifts. Having read a number of tripadvisor reviews on the Champs before I booked the hotel was as expected and in my view represents good value for money given the location.

The hotel is very shabby and needs a lot of maintenance. The bar is small and not big enough to accommodate the number of guests.
However the staff were excellent and could not do enough for you and the food was very good.

In common with the rest of Val d’Isère’s La Daille area, the hotel might not win any awards for the cutest or prettiest exterior in the Alps, but as with all properties, it is the location that really counts!
