“Buffet to die for”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2014 via mobile

The Hotel is in a wonderful position, just a short walk to the main ski slopes. Rooms are all different, but all excellent.
Food is excellent with a wonderful buffet in the evenings, everything from lobster to air dried ham, there is also a sumptuous desert buffet. Team that with attentive and courteous staff, and what more could want. Have been going for over 15 years so I guess that says it all

Booked the Christiania after a few years break. Used to stay at the Latitude but fancied a change and a 5 star experience.

Now a bit more seasoned and used to some proper 5 star places,I would say Christiania is rated against a different system to the norm.

Good points:
- On the piste near the lifts in a minute
- Good ski locker area
- Quality of the food at Dinner is very good on the half board deal, although menu is limited (buffet is good)
- Staff polite and helpful (see bad points too)

Bad points:
- Too close to the infamous Dick's T bar to get any sleep before 5.00 am Mon-Fri
- Spa area is an after thought, badly executed
- Wifi signal intermittent
- TV channel options poor
- Heating system old so rooms very warm, but you can't open the balcony doors due to Dick's
- Bar area lifeless, so we went out and about and found much better places, bar wise and all round, even sacrificing the shirt walk to the slopes
- Staff moved us from one room that was bouncing due to Dick's to another on the same side so we are still having the joys of heavy bass... Will need another chat in the morning! The advice will be 'keep everything closed' - shutters, double glazing and heavy curtains are futile!!

On our jaunts to find better bars (and hence better hotels) I wish we had gone to either Le Savoie or Club Med, although there are two or three others I would place ahead of Christiania.

If you're a partier that can still do all nighters and be up for first lifts, this review doesn't apply to you (and thanks for extending the noise from Dick's from 5.00 until 5.30 while you scream loudly for apparently no reason on your way to your place of rest).

If you're looking for a modern hotel, good spa area, can forfeit some walk time to the slopes, like a good night's sleep to be ready and charged for some of the best skiing in Europe and DON'T want to be kept up all night by thumping bass, go elsewhere.

In hindsight, maybe this was more about damn Dick's than the Christiania, and I may have spawned some new revellers in to the mix... Apologies!

We booked the Christiania a little last minute and were lucky enough to find a family room. The hotel is well decorated and very clean, the staff is extremely warm and efficient, the spa is lovely and has its own pool. The restaurant is great and will cook off the menu for children every night. Breakfast is a buffet and is very complete.
The best surprise is how kids are taken care if because when they are happy, vacation is so much better! Camille manages the kid's club for 5 to 10 year olds in the evenings so parents can have a drink or dinner in the nearby bar or restaurant. The dining room opens at 6 pm for kids only before the main meal is served, allowing kids to get to bed early and not get stuck at the table for a full three course meal. This was a life saver!
The rooms are very nice with a separate cabin for the children with a bunk bed that they loved. The plumbing was great and a special thumbs up goes to the cleaning staff for a great job (turndown service every night also).
The bar is also lovely with a big fire place and very good cocktails. There is a smoking lounge off the bar to keep everyone happy (although it was empty every time I looked).
Val d'Isere is a great place - lots of people from the UK may have a positive effect on the service! The kids had a great skiing experience with the French ski school while they had bad memories of the same school in other ski resorts. We may have just been lucky but maybe it is just a resort thing. The hotel can book ski passes for you when you arrive so you do not have to wait at the ski pass office. There is no ski shop in the hotel but they have a partner store and have the skis delivered.
Last, the hotel location is great. We were used to ski in/ski out resorts so did not love the short walk to the ski area with the two kids the first day but then really got used to it since it only a 5 minute walk to the ski school meeting spot. The upside is that you are in the middle of town and a stone's throw away from the bars, stores and restaurants of the charming village.
We will definitely be back and remain really impressed by this very well run hotel and its amazing staff.

Just got back from spending a week at Hotel Christiana. It was a great week. The hotel is not the Four Seasons and it doesn't try to be something its not. It is, however, a special place run by a dedicated group of people. From the time we checked in until we left, the staff made sure to we comfortable and happy. Our room was a suite on the 5th floor. The elevator made movement in the hotel very quick and easy. The view of the slopes was excellent from our balcony. People have discussed noise from Dick's Tea Bar but we heard very little. It did surprise me to learn that Dick's is not even in the hotel. Its across the street. Either way, it was not an issue.

Getting to and from ski lifts was simple. Ski locker in the basement and carry your equipment about 100 yards to the slopes. The hotel is right in the main village of Val d'isere and everything is within several minutes walk.

We did the half board. I was concerned that we would bore of the selections after the week but this proved untrue. The dinner is offered as a choice of soup or appy bar, a choice of meat or fish entree, a nice cheese selection, followed by a amazing dessert buffet. The appy buffet had about 30-40 amazing options that rotated moderatly night to night. The dessert options were about 20 and also changed night to night. The food was excellent and I highly sugest doing the half board.

The world is a big place and I want to see a lot more of it. Having said that, if I ever return to Val I would definely stay at the Hotel Christiana a second time.

I have stayed at the Christiania with my son in the past and, once again, it was the right decision. Comfortable, spacious room with plenty of storage space and excellent bath/shower room. Very attentive and helpful staff and exceptional catering. Definitely the one to choose for a luxury ski holiday.

We are just about to end our stay at the Christiania and we are so sad to be leaving! It has been the most amazing holiday despite the poor weather and the Val D'Isere dubious ski run colour markings!
The Christiania has made our stay!! The care and consideration of the staff, my wife will not use lifts and we had been placed on the 4th floor, we had not mentioned it at booking as the exercise is much needed but as soon as the reception staff realised, within 5 mins they immediately rang up to ask if we would like a lower floor....so thoughtful, we did decline as the view from our room was well worth the stair run. The rooms are large and spacious and the cleaning regime is second to none! The spa facilities area is very clean, again the staff are so pleasant and helpful, the pool is lovely as too are the sauna and steam room.
The bar area is spacious and comfortable and the bar staff are so attentive and yet allow you space to just sit and relax, their knowledge of drinks is amazing!
The food......fantastic!! The buffet is .... a meal in itself let alone a starter, the main courses are perfect and the selection of desserts is brilliant. Breakfast again is packed with choice...all served by a jolly, friendly, cheerful group who are organized by an extremely professional Maitre d' who has an eagle eye and ensures that everything within the dining experience is perfect.
Thank you so much to all for giving us an amazing holiday.
