This is a great place for History passionate, for people who never lived in a Communist Marxist countries, this is where you can see propaganda villages in the North (it is like playing a real strategic game), you can see and meet some US army staff, a lot to learn when you visit the site. do the tunnel if you are more adventurous...

We took a bus tour to the DMZ which lasted between 7am to 3pm including a one hour bus journey. We got to see the camp Bonifas, the third tunnel and the Doransan station. The tour was very educational and I didn't mind that you were unable to take photos at many of the sights. We even saw a north korean soldier "spying" at us from the other side.

Kudos to S.Korea for turning this place to a tourist spot. technically, this place is on Red Alert because of the war that's still going on between them and North Korea.

even the tunnels that the North Koreans dug to attack Seoul were turned to tourist attraction and i think it's cool especially the state of the art train that they used to intercept the tunnels by creating tunnels of their own.

This is a 'must do'....not because you're going to see some amazing monument or scenery but because you will come face to face with north korea. It's not a joke , you will be asked to sign disclaimers, have a talk by us army personel and under no circumstances walk off track or photograph any thing. You are under constant surveillance. the history and whole day is worth very penny. Didn't do the tunnels as I can get claustrophobic.

Had a great experienced and energetic English speaking guide who brought us to the various attractions like the tunnel, observatory, last train station & museums. He even brought us to nice cheap bulgogi lunch at City Hall afterwards.

It helps if you had some understanding of the Korean conflicts. I suggest visiting the war memorial museum before visiting the DMZ.

Pro:
Learn and experience first-hand the tension and the division between North and South Korea.
Tour consist of multiple locations showing different aspects of the armistice and continuing conflict between the Koreas.
Get to see North Korea close up.

Con:
JSA tour require 48 hrs advance booking.
Remember to bring your passport. Security is pretty tight there.
Tunnel may be uncomfortable for those who are claustrophobic, with walking difficulties or back problem.
There are a number of no photo-taking areas.
Be aware of your surroundings. Wouldn't be good to end up unexpectedly & involuntarily at the wrong side of the border… ;)
