“A lovely spot”
Reviewed August 29, 2012

Flocons de Sel has eight rooms and an apartment attached to the restaurant of the same name, which was awarded three Michelin stars in 2012. It is 4km outside the town of Megeve, perched on a hillside and with beautiful views over the surrounding mountains and woodland. The room I stayed at (room 3) was not particularly large and was not that well lit, but it did have a balcony with a pretty view, and a small lounge alongside the bedroom. The shower was excellent and the bathroom quite large, the bed comfortable. Breakfast, incidentally, is superb, since croissants are made from scratch in the restaurant kitchen, and a warm peach flan was magnificent. There is a spa here, but I was only staying one night so did not have time to take advantage of it. Service was fine, though bear in mind that this is a small place so, for example, the reception desk is not always staffed.

We decided to return to Flocons de Sel after one year. and we we not disappointed. We sat outside on the partly shaded terrace, it was a superb day. Straw hats were provided for those in the sun. We chose the Menu of the Day at €42, it was excellent, it consisted of an hors d'oeuvres ,main dish and dessert. In addition we were served delicious appertisers before each dish. we asked the sommelier to suggest a light red from the region , his suggestion was Mondeuse "Marie-Clothilde" A. Berlioz 2008, price €45; a superb light red wine which which was a treat to drink with our menu which included Trout from Lake Geneva. The coffee (not included in the basic price) was accompanied with "mignardise", cleverly disguised "digestive sweets" filled with liquor. Our bill was €340 for 4 ; including a glass of champagne and a serving of cheese from the generous trolley . The restaurant certainly deserves its 3rd Michelin star. Driving time from the centre of Megeve was 10 minutes.

We had last june a 100% perfect dinner at the flocons. We stayed in a Mazot - some details were not ok in this room, that was a pitty!
Otherwise it was a very pleasant stay!

This is a lovely hotel with wonderful views. Service is so friendly and warm. We loved the drinks and cake that we were served when we arrived. Transportation into town was also another great feature of the hotel. Rooms were large with perfectly appointment large bathrooms. Our only complaint was that we slept with the window open and by 6AM we were covered with flies and could not sleep anymore. Also, we we went to breakfast and the breakfast room was full of flies.

We had dinner at Flocons and we enjoyed our time
friendly and polite staff not too much intrusive
affordable courses for a three star Michelin Restaurant
Sommelier can propose great wine of the Savoie region
I was not completely impressed by the desert so got a second one free of charge without asking anything
at the end of the dinner we had the chance to meet and discuss with the Chef E Renaut
would highly recommend the place

We absolutely loved our stay here. It is a very small, luxurious hotel with an outstanding personalised touch, more like staying at an exclusive catered chalet in feel but with an incredible restaurant attached! We had a Mazot which I would highly recommend; superb views over the valley, beautifully furnished & a divine bed!!

We ate breakfast both in the restaurant and had it delivered to our room & it was very good. My son requested gauffres which they couldn't do immediately but provided them the next day - they will try to accommodate whatever you want, you just have to ask. Lunches were excellent (although one of the waiters clearly did not know the menu well as we had to show it to him to persuade him we could order a hamburger!). Otherwise superb. A birthday supper was truly memorable and again the chef kindly prepared my husband's favourite soufflé with pleasure as a special request. The food was outstanding, as you would expect with 3* and the waiting staff charming. They even invited our son into the kitchen to choose his food & then again to help prepare the soufflé - something I have never come across in a 3* restaurant. Simply fantastic.

Given the small number of rooms, the spa is fabulous. The pool has a swim jet, the sauna is the first one I have found with a view of the mountains & the wooden hot tub is an inspired addition. The beds are set around the pool, the spa is glass fronted on 2 sides making it bright & giving breathtaking views. The spa staff were friendly & professional.

The owners are incredibly friendly and welcoming & definitely set the exemplary tone for the hotel. We will definitely be back & I know it will feel like we are visiting old friends.

All in all an outstanding stay. If I was to offer any constructive criticism it would be that sometimes the staff do miss tiny details. For example, once, we ordered room service coffee & tea after dinner so we could get our son to bed but it never arrived. Likewise we did request crepes one morning for breakfast but these were missed off & we only got a breakfast setting for 2 (our son was missed off). Also we only found out by accident that the restaurant was shut on Tuesday and Wednesday of our stay. Not a problem for us but if you were coming for the food, you would be annoyed to find this out once you had arrived, but then you would probably discover this as you must book in advance. The restaurant closure does not affect room service though. These are hardly big issues & nothing is ever absolutelyperfect. This place is pretty damn close to it though!!

Room Tip: Book a Mazot!

I am travelling all year long in good hotels and become more and more difficult. Our stay at Flocon de Sel impressed me though in many aspects. Welcome was perfect and we were swiftly escorted to our room. On our way was a large living room on two levels with a couple of chimneys and a large terrace.
We got a beautiful room with a ready to use wood stove, a large bathroom, a nice balcony and great view to the mountains. Wow 1!
Then we decided to enjoy the spa. Great massage followed by a plunge in the indoor swimming pool. Indoor, yes, but with a great view on the mountains (covered with snow). Magic! Wow 2! There is also a outdoor hot-bath for the most courageous guests...
We later had dinner (reviewed separately) but in short, super Wow (#3)!
After a great night sleep, we ordered the breakfast (yes, in bed :-)). Great coffee (important!), great food with some original stuffs... Wow 4!
At all time, staff was incredible. In France, it is exceptional! That's another Wow (#5)!
We didn't experience everything. There is for instance a free shuttle to the centre of Megève (the Flocon de Sel is slightly outside, in the middle of the mountain - still accessible by car). Free wifi is also available.
Verdict? Any doubt? Flocon de Sel is just a fabulous experience! Just try (must be booked in advance as there is a very limited number of rooms)!
