Ahead of our reservation at Villa Florentine I didn’t quite know exactly what to expect from our stay, other than it was going to be special— and our expectations were met and exceeded. Like others have mentioned: the views are breathtaking, the staff is kind and exceedingly helpful, the rooms comfortable and well thought out. Villa Florentine has earned its place as a favorite hotel, and a main reason we are very eager to return to Lyon.

I do want to expand on how helpful the staff is, which to me is a hallmark of a truly great hotel and a guarantee for a memorable stay. They kindly provided an orientation to the hotel/Lyon over refreshments (delicious fresh juices and pastries), gave us advice on interesting points to see in Lyon, and assisted with a last minute wardrobe malfunction quickly. During our stay we had dinner reservations at Paul Bocuse, and had several questions about the experience— to which the concierge was very knowledgeable.

A few quick bits on the hotel’s location: The hotel is impressively built on top of, and in to, a hill that overlooks all of Lyon, but connected to the old city. It is about a 15 minute walk to the flatter part of Lyon, which is connected by several foot bridges. In order to head out from/return to the hotel on foot, you need to take a series of steep stairs that spits you right in the old city. You can also take a slightly longer walk down a less steep path. I wanted to make note of this in the event a reader has mobility issues. Uber and taxis were plentiful, and we found ourselves walking downhill and taking a taxi back which wasn’t a problem at all. For those who like a bit of a walk, Villa Florentine is within a reasonable distance to the Roman ruins (~25 - 30 mins walk), and even closer to the Cathedral— which is accessible by a lovely rose garden pathway (which was lovely even in the winter!) or a funicular up the mountain.

We can’t wait to return! Thank you, Villa Florentine for a memorable stay.

My husband and I visited La Villa Florentine in November. From the day 1, it was nothing but magical. The staff were superb all around. They were very attentive and kind. It felt like we were taken care of well during our stay.

This was clearly one of the best hotels we have ever stayed at anywhere in the world. From arrival to departure the level of assistance, friendliness, helpfulness, cleanliness and anything else one can think of were an 11 on a 10 point scale! Just superb!

The concierge (Gerald) could not have been more accommodating. He helped unload the car and then safely parked it in their private garage with our excess luggage for the duration of our stay. He then helped us reload it in the rain for our departure. Taxis and restaurant reservations appeared effortlessly. It was like one only had to imagine what one wanted and the staff made it happen.

The front desk personnel were super helpful. They had suggestions for everything from where to go, what to see and how to get there, even to riding the cable car up the hill.

The room was great. We had a view out over the city which was in a valley and looked more Italian than French. Everything worked and was spotlessly clean. You could have parked 2 motorbikes in the shower.

Our only regret was that the hotel's restaurant was closed the two evenings were were there. We really wanted to try it. Oh well, maybe next time.

The day we left there was a city wide power outage. So it wasn't possible to prepare a folio or process a credit card payment. Not a problem for this "can do" staff. We estimated the total together, wrote it on a note card and when we were halfway to Reims, an email came through with the full folio, credit card slip and an explanation.

This was a property worthy of the Relais Chateax name. Top notch in every aspect and worth every penny of the cost!

Room tip: Ask for a room looking out to the city, down the hill, overlooking the terrace and pool

We enjoyed the Villa Florentine. What stood out above all were the staff, each of whom were pleasant and very helpful.

The hotel itself, as you would guess from the name, goes for the vintage Italian look and feel, and largely succeeds.

It’s a spacious, quiet establishment on a hill in the old quarter of Lyon, so be ready for challenging climbs if you prefer to go everywhere by foot.

Our room was spacious and clean, and was maintained so by an attentive but unobtrusive cleaning staff. A slight quibble stems from the room design, which had the toilet in a separate, small room from the bathroom itself. We have come across this design before in Belgium, and the same difficulties with it were evident, in that it actually means the toilet room is harder to clean and to ventilate adequately.

That though is not the fault of the people working in the hotel.

Another plus was the breakfast. It appeared a bit pricey at first, but in fact wasn’t given the range and high quality of the food and drinks available. Once again, as with all of the other staff we met, those at breakfast were very personable.

Unique property in a great location with exceptional service and wonderful view over old town and skyline of Lyon. Excellent cuisine at restaurant again with great service. Bathroom could use a mild upgrade but that's of minor significance. I would definitely recommend and stay there again.
