“Amazing treat!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 25, 2014

I stayed here for one night for a birthday treat to myself. It was amazing. Expensive but amazing. I had a standard size room which was large and well decorated. The welcome home made treats were awesome! The open air pool and Jacuzzi was perfect on a sunny day and the bar overlooked the city too. The cocktails and accompanying snacks were perfect, despite the high price.

I visited the sauna and hamman too, which took a little exploring but were a nice end to the day.

The hotel is near Fourviere and a short walk down to Vieux Lyon.

This is a great hotel, with really helpful and knowledgeable staff - a true 5* experience.

My wife and I had the pleasure of staying here with four other couples for two nights. As soon as we walked through the door, the staff was exceptionally pleasant and accommodating. We arrived pretty late, so the chef at Les Terrasses de Lyon came out and took our orders ahead of time so that they could get ready while we unpacked.

The rooms were quiet and a good size for Europe. We had a breathtaking view of Lyon. The concierge was excellent, highlighting a great walking route throughout the city, points of interest, and providing umbrellas for the weather. The recommended some great little restaurants and arranged reservations.

The terrace was fantastic - they even opened the bar for us as we were the only ones up there (I guess we were somewhat night owls) until we were done. It was really appreciated. The staff was excellent.

Do note, that the hotel is on a hill. a big hill. (why do you think the views are so stunning?) If you like stairs - you can go right into town. If you prefer switchbacks, just follow the roads. very easy.

Hot tub was great and the pool lovely. the pool is not heated - which was quite refreshing. Go and enjoy a fantastic property in a fantastic city!

Room Tip: if you get a room overlooking the terrace - you may get a few night owls like us...you can either cl...

Beautiful hotel, with reasonable size and a great view of Lyon. By night, the place has a magical side. The rooms are large and very comfortable. Some have views of the "Vieux Lyon". Pleasant terrace and pool. Excellent restaurant. Great staff.

My husband and I booked three nights in Villa Florentine to celebrate a special birthday last week but we left after two nights. Our room, No. 2, was directly under the terrace of the restaurant Les Terraces de Lyon and the noise of the metal furniture being dragged across the concrete floor above our heads kept us awake until after 2.00 am and woke us at 7.00 am despite the use of earplugs. This is not acceptable in any hotel let alone a five star hotel.

The front of house personnel were welcoming and friendly and the building was lovely but be warned the location and the hotel are not suitable for people with impaired mobility. It is situated on a steep hill and while the hotel offers wonderful views of Lyon the only way to access the town without a car is by negotiating over 200 steps on either side of the building. It is not too bad going down but the climb back up is tough on old knees and hips. It is not possible to hail a taxi in Lyon and we could not find a convenient taxi rank.

It would have been helpful to have a book in our room with information about the history of the hotel, the location of taxi ranks and the services on offer in the hotel but strangely none was available.

We ate in the Michelin starred restaurant Les Terraces on our second night. We were the first patrons to arrive but we sat from 7.30 to 8.30 pm without being served anything to eat. It was galling to watch other people, who arrived long after us, being served their amouse bouche before us. We complained about the service but it made no difference. We are not unfamiliar with fine dining but we have never experienced such slow service in a Michelin starred restaurant before. The delay might have been due to staff watching the World Cup, although France was not playing that night. We gave our order to a female member of staff and half an hour later we were handed menus by a male waiter, we wondered where he had been and why he was unaware that we had already ordered.

All in all our stay in Villa Florentine left a lot to be desired and is not one we will repeat. Anyone who wants to visit Lyon should think carefully about staying in a hotel that is so difficult to access without a car. Rooms 1, 2 and 3 should be avoided at all costs and do not expect to eat a morsel in the restaurant without a very lengthy wait.

Getting to Villa Florentine from Vieux Lyon takes either 250 or 267 steps (up) depending on which of two stairways from Rue La Boeuf is accessed. It's a lot of work, but the hotel and its view are worth the climb. My wife and two teenage daughters who comprised our party all agree.

The hotel is a renovated rectory that retains some of its original frescoes and structure...but everything else in the hotel is beautifully updated and modern. Truthfully, the reception area and lounge are both so comfortably sized and decorated the resulting feel is more that of a large living room than a hotel lobby.

The desk staff and the concierge are both positioned at the entrance and no matter what time of the day we came/went they were friendly and offered their assistance for any needs. Upon our arrival we were greeted with a glass of champagne and macarons; served on their balcony overlooking "Old Lyon", the Saone and rest of Lyon far below. Perhaps most enjoyable, they gave us time to relax from our travels and were clearly not rushing us to the room.

The attendant escorted us to our two rooms (old style deadbolt keys, checked at the desk upon leaving) and gave us a thorough review and inspection of both our rooms. They were spotless, updated and comfortable with ample light and windows looking over the city. The only negative aspect of the rooms were the lack of power outlets in the bathroom; my wife and daughters were forced to sit on the floor while operating their hair dryers and curling irons. Of greater importance was that the A/C was strong enough to cool the room while we were in it.

It's here worth noting that on our trip to Lyon (TGV Train) one of our daughters lost her iPhone on the train. The concierge was extremely patient and helpful in filing our "loss claim". He even followed up with TGV for the length of our stay (five days) to see if anyone turned in the phone. Very helpful, indeed. Incidentally, the concierge desk was just as helpful prior to our arrival making various arrangements beyond "just dinner."

We didn't eat in the hotel - opting instead to explore France's Food Capital for all of our meals throughout our stay. That said, the hotel offers probably the finest "turn down chocolates" that we've ever had! My daughters and wife spent some time at their outdoor pool...a very nice amenity for such a quaint property.

This was my first stay at an exclusive "Relais and Chateau" rated property. I went into it with an open mind and have concluded that while the service and quality of facilities of the Villa Florentine are excellent, there are other "certified luxury" hotels that I consider to be comparable.

The biggest difference between the others and the Villa Florentine is the scale...everything at Villa Florentine just seemed so personal to us. We truly felt like the only guests who were staying with them...and in this day and age of "bigger is better" that's to us a value beyond money. I'd never stay in Lyon anywhere BUT the Villa Florentine...sweaty stair-climb and all!

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the city.

Back again this year and stayed three nights together with our Labrador. This is a beautiful hotel and made even better because the staff are outstanding. There are 3 large rooms with lovely private garden terraces which are very good for breakfast or dinner if you can drag yourself away from the beautiful restaurant. Lyon is a fabulous city for walking if you don't mind some serious hills, and 15 minutes walk high above the hotel is the amazing cathedral.

While located on a hill, it was rather accessible via a flight of stairs near the main streets of old Lyon.

The room was well-furnished, comfortably sized for a family, and opened up to a fantastic view of the city.

Very friendly and helpful staff. They made my family and I feel very welcomed and well taken care of. Communication was very easy and pleasant.
