“Great location, great sleep”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2011

As others have noted, you really can't beat the location. And it's on the same bus line as the Gare Part Dieu, so it's easy to get to the one place in the city you want to go that would be a pain to walk to, especially with bags.

The one thing I want to highlight is that they're clearly responding to the noise problem, because the room I stayed in (right above the door, probably the noisiest location) had a new window wall put in front of the windows. It shortens the room by about a foot, but the new windows are very big and don't block any light, but best of all, it makes the room extremely quiet. Even being there on a Saturday night, we had no problem at all with noise.

It appears the whole place is getting revamped a bit, and it's still in progress (our new wall/windows had not yet been painted to match the room), but they're certainly addressing the noise issues.

Pro:
-location, location, location. This hotel is in the old part of Lyon which is breathtaking. Just step out of the hotel and you feel you are hundreds of years in the past. Go into the traboules, walk the cobblestone streets, all amazing.
-if you take one of the front facing rooms, they are huge (especially by European standards).
-if you take one of the front facing rooms the bathrooms are huge. This room had a full size tub and shower.
-front desk is very helpful
-they have a very good continental breakfast but there is an extra charge.
-free wifi
-great atmosphere. The rooms have a real European feel.
-huge windows with shutters (lots of daylight streaming into the room)

Cons:
-no elevator so you need to lug your luggage up a winding stair case (luckily we were on the second floor so it was not much of chore).
-can be noisy. We faced the street and the noise from people is quite loud. Being there in January, during the week, the noise was not too bad, but I’m not sure I would have liked it on a weekend night in the summer.
-no in room safe

Summary:
We loved this hotel. The room, the location, the staff, all made for a wonderful experience. BUT I am not sure I would have been so happy in the summer, take ear plugs if you go at that time.

I had a look at one of the inside rooms, they would be a lot more quiet but they were significantly smaller and darker.

Well, we came back. We liked the place two years ago, and we liked it again this time.

In a way it's a typical French city 2-star hotel, so don't expect a lot of space or huge comfort or an elevator; but it's beautifully clean, it's very well run and extremely friendly.

This hotel is in a renovated centuries-old historic building situated in a pedestrian street in the heart of the old city. Walk down the pedestrian street, and you quickly reach an excellent tea house, then a whole selection of restaurants offering local fare. All this is within a quarter mile or so, near the river Saone.

It's easy to get around the city by subway or trolleybus.

Like other reviewers have mentioned, the hotel is in a great location (unless you are travelling by car with a borrowed SatNav – do not get lost, the old town is full of one-way streets!). We don’t usually travel by car and shouldn’t have done so this time. Public transport is good and parking is ludicrously expensive.

The Hotel is certainly quirky. Again, as other reviewers have pointed out – only stay here if you’re a deep sleeper. Rooms facing the road will get the noise from late night revellers (of which there are many). Rooms facing the (tiny) courtyard, will get the noise from inconsiderate guests (of which there are many). I found it a little peculiar that our room opened into the stairwell, which meant that all the guests walking up the stairs could look into our room. As it was very warm and there was no aircon, we had to sleep with the window open and felt a little vulnerable. In the morning we were woken (yes, we did sleep a little) by cigarette smoke drifting into our room from the courtyard below. To be fair, on arrival we had a choice of room and picked this one as the lesser of two evils. The other room we looked at was much larger and airier, but did face the road.

The staff was very friendly and helpful, breakfast is basic – typically French baguette with jam. In summary, it’s a good value hotel and I would recommend it if noise doesn’t bother you.

We loved Lyon but when we come back we will stay in the newer part of the city as, in our opinion, it had more to offer, whilst the old town felt more like a tourist trap.

I spent 3 nights at this hotel with my girlfriend. The location is one of the best you can get in Lyon. There is an easy link to Lyon airport with bus line C3 only 1 minute walk from he hotel which leaves from Gare St Paul and goes straight to Part Dieu where you can get the bus to the airport.. A 5-10 minute walk along Rue St Jean (just outside the hotel and turn right) and you will be at Vieux Lyon metro station, from here you can access most of Lyon within 15-20 minutes or get the funicular railway to Fourviere cathedral. Day ticket reccomended- you can get unlimited access to metro, tram and bus for 24 hours for around 5 euros. The hotel is also within walking distance of Fourviere (15 minutes, steeply uphill), Place de Terreaux, Hotel de Ville and the Opera House (10 minutes).

The interior of the hotel is basic, we had a double room 226 at the back of the hotel, there was no noise from outside just other guests coming and going so no problem that way. The interior was clean, the room consisted of double bed, bedside table, one open wardrope a shower/ sink area and a separate toilet. The decoration is not spectacular it has to be said, however I would point out that the character of this hotel is provided by the building itself and by the friendliness of the staff. The staff seem genuinely to want you to have a good time during your visit and will give you a briefing on where to go/where not to go when you arrive. There is no lift in this hotel and access to the rooms is via a fairly narrow spiral staircase which is not ideal but the staff are more than willing to help with any difficulties.

When you go out I would recommend Rue Mercier on Presqu'ile for eating, it provides a whole street of different restaurants of all types although there are plenty of nice place in Vieux Lyon aswell. For drinking, if you are looking for English speaking places I would recommend The Wallace on Quai de Saaone 2 minutes from the hotel, it also serves food. If you are looking for typically french places there are literally hundreds of cafe/bars dotted around.

I would also recommend that you visit Parc Tete d'Or during your stay. there are plenty of activities there including boating on the lake and a zoo which is free to enter, the closest metro stations are Foch and Massena each of which are around 5-10 minut walk to the park.

The location for this hotel is fabulous, in the center of old Lyon. The staff was very nice and helpful. Unfortunately, the old building in which the hotel is located does not yield to a "quiet setting". There is an immense staircase that goes up through the hotel. Our room window opened to the staircase which also overlooks a small courtyard. People came in and out through that staircase at all hours of the night speaking loudly with no respect to anyone's sleep, even if there is a big sign on the door asking for "silence" at night. The rooms are also very, very small, but we knew that.

Stayed at this hotel with my boyfriend for a few days in the summer. The location in the old town is great - we walked to the sights in the old town and could easily walk across the river to eat and sight see in the Presquile. Our room was very clean, and cute - but small. It was fine for us as a couple - very cozy! The people at the front desk were friendly and there was a computer there so we could use the internet for free. The price - for a French hotel - is excellent. We thought it was comfortable, a great value, and in a great location!
