One unique and special thing you find in Lyon are the ancient traboules. Make sure you walk through a few of them. You'll see how the city once was organized, with covered passageways between larger streets. But people live in these traboules; don't be the typical American tourist and make a lot of noise. During the Resistance, freedom fighters often used these to escape the unwitting Nazis, who thought the doors to the traboules were simply doors to houses. By the time they realized a person they were following was not emerging, they had exited on another street. Charming.

It's amazing that people leave the doors of their homes open,so the tourists can visit the Treboules.
The fact above is enough to understand the importance of these structures for the city of Lyon.
In my opinion they are really interesting, lovely and shouldn't be avoided if someone wants to explore and understand the city and its development over the years.

A curious ways to discovers the secret life Lyon's canuts. Why the courtyards are built higher than the entry door, where were the stocks, the stables and where they had machines. Why the whole textile industry have moved from this district to the Croix Rousse (thanks to Mr. Jacquard).
