“Handy and nice enough”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2013

Only a couple of blocks from the Lyon train station, this hotel is a good accommodation. Our room was a corner oneon floor 2 and, while there was street noise mid-evening, it was quiet at night. The room was clean and comfortable; beds slept well. One item that could be addressed is mold on some of shower tiles. Staff nice and helpful. Did not do breakfast.

It is hard to say what surprised me more, the condition of the hotel- heavily worn, the apathy of the receptionist- for three days, or the dreariness of the room. This hotel has taken a downturn since the glowing reviews. If you have business in the train station area then it may be convenient enough for you but it is a significant walk or a subway ride of multiple stops to go anywhere you want to visit in Lyon. Between the mold in the bathroom and the stale croissants and meager offerings for breakfast I would not stay here again, nor recommend that others do so. We asked the receptionist to call a cab, we were informed that there was a stand in the square two blocks away. After waiting a while the restaurant across the street called us a cab. Lots of small things added up to an unpleasant visit in this hotel.

Maybe we just arrived at the wrong time but I can't really see how this hotel deserves such a good rating by most reviewers. It's old, not quaint. In fact, it's more then just old, it's outdated (and a bit smelly in the lobby). The staff is unfriendly. Breakfast consist of old bread and yoghurt.
First of all, the good news: the location. It's reasonably close to the city center so that's a good thing. And if you want to use the public transport, it's even better because a large train station is just around the corner.
But the worst thing is the room. Saying the room is tiny is an understatement. It's smaller than 2 meters! Frankly, it feels like a coffin. The beds are very hard, pillows are very thin. The bed isn't wide but that's otherwise impossible because the room is too small. The elevator is extremely claustrofobic and the stairs are small, steep and right out dangerous.
Staff couldn't care less about us and only care that you hang the key in the reception when you walk out.
And for all this magic you get to pay a lot. The room we were in (again, very small) was over 100 €. In any chain hotel, you get a lot more for you money. This is a rip-off.

I wanted a reasonable hotel for a few days, this hotel was great. Yes the room was very small but very clean and comfortable bed. Great breakfast buffet and reception staff was great. I would stay here again and recommend to friends. Only negative for guests was that the elevator was not working. I was fine, I did not have much luggage and stairs were fine for me but others might have trouble. Hopefully this is just temporary.

Great location. Its about a 10minute walk to the station and 15 minute walk to the city centre. Big sized room and amazingly hot shower. Staff were friendly enough but it was easy to navigate around on your own.

The hotel is located near the Place Carnot, not too far from the Perrache train station, some of the main shopping streets and about 1/2 mile south of Place Bellecour, one of the main squares and the location of the tourist office. The tram and metro stops are several blocks away. I had a car and appreciated the fact that the hotel was located just a few blocks off the A6/A7 autoroute and parking was available for 13 euros per day in a private secure garage 1 block east of the hotel. The room was small by American standards but there was still room to move around. There was adequate storage space for my clothes in a good sized closet and a nice-sized bathroom with shower. A desktop computer doubled as a TV. The TV worked fine but I could not get the internet to work on the computer. However, the hotel has free WiFi which worked fine on my tablet. The room is airconditioned. The windows also open, but my room faced the street and it could get a little noisy if the windows are open. A good breakfast buffet is available for an additional price. Hotel staff were courteous and helpful.

Before we go on to what made it a bad experience, let me tell you a few good things about the hotel -
1) It is a centrally located hotel;
2) The hotel is located close to the tramway, so travelling around the city is no problem
3) Some hotel staff are courteous;
4) The lobby is tastefully decorated.

Now for the bad part -
1) In the room I was first given, the air conditioner blew out warm air. When I asked them the reason for this, they said that they maintain the same temperature across all rooms during this month, and hence will not be able to change it. And that October, Lyon was not at all cold. After a lot of negotiation, I got a room that faced an open lot instead of the street as before. I was advised to leave the windows open if I wanted to stay in the room at a decent temperature.

2) The bathroom - so small that even kids will have a very bad time navigating their way about it. On top of that, it's made entirely of some plastic material, and looks very very cheap and contrasting to how tastefully their lobby is done.

I would suggest this place only if you are staying for one to two days, and are not going to stay in the room for a lot of time. But if you get a better hotel, go for it!
