“Good buy for a basic hotel”
Reviewed October 10, 2010

Hotel La Residence, Lyon, France, is a basic three star hotel. It had all the "amenities" required of the three star rating, but it seemed like they were just squeaking over the line of that rating. On the other hand, the price was in the approximately $110 dollar range, which made the hotel a good value in an excellent location.

Our corner room was large and comfortable, not noisy, but the decor screamed (orange, red and purple). I looked in other rooms and not all are decorated in quite this clashing a combination. But most seemed large, which is good. The beds were OK but not great. The bathroom was small and oddly shaped, making it hard for both to use at one time. The elevator was slower than molasses.

All those things said, let me add, the staff were great; friendly and helpful. The breakfast was reasonable in cost and good value for the money with good, standard breakfast buffet fare, more than a roll and coffee. The hotel is on a mostly pedestrian street a block from Place Bellecour, the central square of Lyon's older but not oldest part of the city. It is near (three blocks to) a number of the bouchon restaurants, for which Lyon is famous. It is also two blocks from the Saone and the crossing into "Old Lyon" where the Medieval and Roman cities were located. Both are worth a look and the museum of Roman Lyon (as well as the site with the theater complex) is a three star attraction with some fabulous mosaics. All are in walking distance provided you take the funicular train up to the top of the old city.

I would recommend this hotel provided the person was not looking for luxury or a spa experience. This is a basic, decent hotel for a good price but not a fancy place.

This hotel is centrally located with everything you could want to see close to hand. The hotel is small as is the lift, one of the few negatives about this hotel.I had a double room which was very spacious. There was a double bed, single bed and even a bed in the wall. The bed was very comfortable and i slept very well with none of the noise mentioned in other reviews. The bath is very large and comfortable. The room also has a safe and a LCDtv.The only slight letdown was the breakfast which is 8 euros per day.Limited selection and what there was was not great.Hot water was poured into a small urn.So if there was not enough water left then you did not get a cup of tea. Also as mentioned there is a free pc in the foyer. If i come back to Lyon i would definately stay here again.

Price and location were the best features. Very centrally situated, but very noisy at night in the street outside with drunk and noisy people and service vehicles. Allegedly this hotel has A/C but so ineffective and can't be adjusted, so the windows need to be opened and let in the noise. Reception staff were patchy - some helpful, some not.

Re Lyon in general - not a great city. Food is great and some good regional tourism, but we thought a dirty, uninspiring city that has tourist pretentions, but doesn't live up to them. Eat at nearby Le Sud brasserie (a Paul Bocuse brasserie) at least once during your stay. Unless you have specific interests there or in the region, suggest give it a miss or spend a few extra days in Paris instead !

This is very good family run hotel perfectly placed in the centre of the of Vieux Lyon a short distance from the Old and New towns. It is about 3.5 kms from the main station although there is a Metro station very close by. the area is a delightful pedestrian and shopping precinct, in a delightful city. We would recommend anyone visiting Lyon to try and book a 'Lyon City Greeter' - a free service provided by local people who are proud to show visitors the highlights of this city

It's centrally located, clean and reasonably priced. So no serious complaints.

But the pedestrian walkway it's located on is not particularly nice, and gets very, very nosiy at night when hald the drunken youths of Lyon congregate there. Rooms are clean and reasonably comfortable, though not at all charming or anything like that. My experience in France is that you can pay low prices and still stay in places with quite a bit of charm and character - this is not one of those places.

Also - and we only saw the one person while we stayed, so others could have been better - the person on reception was not at all helpful when it came to recommending places to eat.

Overall though, fine. And Lyon is a beautiful city, we really enjoyed it.

This beautiful hotel offers a great location : next to both 2 metro stops Bellacour and Victor Hugo.

+) The hotel is in the very historical downtown, so you can take a walk to just about anywhere. Staff were friendly and i like the complementary internet access on the PC at the lobby.

+) I don't like the fact that the room is following old style but i guess that increases its charming value.

+)Breakfast was good enough for the price of 8 euro

We only stayed at La Residence for 2 nights and just love this hotel (also Lyon, of course)

Lyon is a beautiful city and very easy to navigate. This hotel was about a 10 minute walk from the the Perrache train station along a street filled with shopping a restuarants. Bellecoeur Square is only about a couple minutes walk past the hotel and there is a tourist office on the way to the hotel and on the right side of the square where you can buy city passes to museums (recommended).

Hotel Pros: free internet access in the lobby, yummy french/american breakfast, nice front desk staff, great price, decent size and clean room...but not a lot of ambience. Our window overlooked the back parking lot, but it was quiet. There is also a little area on the first floor I believe where you can sit. I sat there in the evening and read my guide book.

Cons: The manager (with the gorgeous eyes) ran my card before checkout and not in my presence. It may be a cultural thing, but I thought it was odd. What if I wanted to pay with cash or another card? He was friendly enough otherwise, so it didn't think it was too weird, just a little troubling...could be because my friend and I look young....who knows.

I'd stay there again for the location, price and breakfast. Especially if I were to take the train.
