If you enjoy free and very clever artwork then go to the tourist office and ask for a list of the Muras (murals).
Then with a day metro/tram ticket be prepared for some outstanding art in an outdoor gallery that stretches across the city.
The Lyonese have developed an art style that takes otherwise blank walls, ends of buildings etc, to create huge works of art that are fascinating, fun and very clever.
The one up at Croix Rousse, is huge and at first glance you think it is the continuation of the road but up a stairway, but then close inspection reveals more and more little details of everyday life in Lyon.
Some such as those along the banks of the Soane, have taken everyday scenes such as bookshops and boulangeries etc and painted them in full size, complete with customers walking out of the shops, pigeons perched, scooters parked etc and you swear at first glance it is all real.
Another depicts a building with balconies, and on each balcony are famous Lyonese people such as the Lumiere brothers.
Going towards Part Dieu, an entire city block of apartment buildings has each end of each block painted with ideas of cities, past and present.
These murals are a wonderful part of Lyon and makes the visitor look up and look closer at what is around.
