“Just one of dozens throughout Lyon”
Reviewed May 9, 2013 via mobile

If you enjoy free and very clever artwork then go to the tourist office and ask for a list of the Muras (murals).
Then with a day metro/tram ticket be prepared for some outstanding art in an outdoor gallery that stretches across the city.

The Lyonese have developed an art style that takes otherwise blank walls, ends of buildings etc, to create huge works of art that are fascinating, fun and very clever.

The one up at Croix Rousse, is huge and at first glance you think it is the continuation of the road but up a stairway, but then close inspection reveals more and more little details of everyday life in Lyon.

Some such as those along the banks of the Soane, have taken everyday scenes such as bookshops and boulangeries etc and painted them in full size, complete with customers walking out of the shops, pigeons perched, scooters parked etc and you swear at first glance it is all real.

Another depicts a building with balconies, and on each balcony are famous Lyonese people such as the Lumiere brothers.

Going towards Part Dieu, an entire city block of apartment buildings has each end of each block painted with ideas of cities, past and present.

These murals are a wonderful part of Lyon and makes the visitor look up and look closer at what is around.

“Worth a look”
Reviewed March 25, 2013

It is only a wall with a painting on it, but the painting is so realistic! It's amazing how they have done it and made it all into proportion. I actually had to walk right up to the wall to check it wasn't really 3D!

“This Is An Extra Bonus if You Visit La Croix Rousse”
Reviewed February 2, 2013

It is worth it to go to La Croix Rousse...take the walking tour recommended in the Michelin Guide. The whole area is very nice, out of the standard tourist route. Just taking the Metro/cog Railway from Hôtel de Ville is worth it. The Mur des Canuts is a bonus. Well worth seeing...but under renovation as of february 2013 so some of it is obscured by scaffolding.

“La Croix-Rousse in not-quite 3D”
Reviewed January 15, 2013

Extraordinary trompe l'oeil painting over a 1200m2 wall – it shows local Lyon in superb detail, brought up to date every 10yrs or so. Saw the second version in autumn 2011. As of January 2013, it's being restored/up-dated for the third time.

“sorry to be critical, but..."boring"”
Reviewed June 11, 2012

I just do not understand what all the fuss is about. Ok, the painter/painters must have been talented. And yes, the wall looks quite nice from far away. But, if that is all Lyon has to offer as an attraction, that is really sad. I saw a tour-bus parked in front of the wall with tourists pouring out to take pictures, and I thought to myself, if I were one of the tourists, I would be so disappointed because Banksy, it is not. If you are in that part of the Croix Rousse, get some compensation by soaking up a great view of the eastern horizon at the esplanade of the Gros Caillou nearby.
