Difficult for us to find as we arrived by Metro/Express from the airport. To reach the hotel one has to go up a couple of levels in a complex and make ones way towards the Railway Station. From the top floor of the complex one can easily spot the hotel, in a less than salubrious location overlooking the railway yard. But don't be put off, as it well run and comfortable. Our superior room was large enough. With hidsight we should have taken a taxi from the airport, but we thought the train and metro would give us a different view of Lyons suburbs. We often stay at the mercure chain and have never found cause for complaint. The whole 4 day city break was arranged by BA.com and we were very pleased with it.

We picked this hotel based on a seemingly favorable review in the New York Times. I'm not going to go back to the Times to see if I misread or misinterpreted the review but after staying there I am less inclined to recommend it... And the fault is not with the hotel but with the location.
First, the Hotel is old, charming has an incredible staff and is reasonably priced - sounds great, so far. The fly in the ointment is that the hotel is on the south side of the (massive) station complex which itself would not be a problem except for the homeless and the prostitutes that make the station their home and place of business.
I will say we were not accosted at all (except for the very ripe smell of some unwashed masses yearning to breath free) and had no trouble getting past those impediments both literally and figuratively, and as I said the staff is wonderful, knowledgeable and accommodating, but this review is the warning I didn't get so you can make an informed decision.
Weigh the convenience of the station, the price and the staff against the very localized environment.
PS - the Hotel would be a 4+ star if Lyon would tear down the station or rebuild it in a different way, something I hear they have been discussing for ten years.

This is an art deco older hotel right next to the Lyon Perrache train station. The front desk staff was friendly and efficient, and the room was of a solid 3.5-star quality, with a view towards the railroad track and some mountain and cityscape. I only heard one train at night (around midnight) and another one in the morning (around 8am), and noise was in general not a problem. Air con worked fine. Bed was good, albeit a tad firm, and linens were good.

The location is not ideal; it's a 15 to 20-min walk along the pedestrian shopping street, rue Victor Hugo, to Place Bellecoeur, in the southern part of town center. Not a bad walk, but not as convenient. My car GPS took me to the lower back entrance of the hotel. I had to ring the bell to be let in, then went one level up to the lobby. I then drove around a few curves through the train station car rental lot into the hotel main entrance, where a few (about 10) free parking spaces were available to hotel guests. I was lucky to have found one and so didn't have to pay for secured indoor parking (16 euors per night, I believe).

There was a homeless "tent city" on the ground level of the train station garage. The hotel staff told me that it's inhabited by gypsies. The police tried to drive them away, but they would just come back, and now they've been there for a few months. They are not aggressive or dangerous, but it's a strange sight to see this little homeless village right in the middle of the garage.

We stayed one night in this hotel on June 23. It is immediately adjacent to the Parrache train station and on a main highway through Lyon. It is a lovely, very quiet, elegant and friendly place. Our room was huge by European standards and very comfortable. This is the second Mercure we have stayed at (another in Paris a couple of years ago). This one had the same goofy small glass wall on the tub that garauntees that you will flood the bathroom when you shower. Just request extra towels. The rest of it is great. Breakfast in the dining room is pricey, but so relaxing the first morning after a transatlantic flight.

Room Tip: 209 was a large corner room, very quiet in spite of the adjacent train station and highway. It has t...

We spent four nights in this hotel, chosen for its location and the fact that it had a covered car park, which was expensive at 17€ per night. Reception space and dining room are lovely, but bedrooms are small. Hotel more aimed at business travellers, and thus rather lacks atmosphere. Reception and dining room staff pleasant, and breakfast very decent except for the coffee which was not!

We only stayed here for the one evening, but found the room to be clean and comfortable, although a little dark. The road noise was loud with the doors open, but that was to be expected being so central. With the doors closed we couldn't hear anything.

A nice hotel, a bit noisy due to its proximity to the train station & highway. However, the hotel has installed steel shutters to block some of the noise. Decorated to look like a hotel from an Agatha Christie novel, the rooms were large and comfortable. Breakfast was good.
