“Good place for a Lyon visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2012

Good sized room made us feel welcome in Lyon. Window faced train voie, but was quiet with window closed. AC worked well. We travelled by train and this was a two minute walk (if that) from the Part Dieu station. Note: Station has two sides, so make sure to choose the correct exit. Metro at station gave great access to the rest of Lyon. We used a carnet over two days. A minute or two past the station in the other direction was a large shopping mall with at least two Paul boulangeries (good for breakfast).

Visited 4 nights end May for Birthday celebration. Location is right at the hub of all transport links. Rhone Express from St Exupery airport (14 euro per trip) drops off just other side of main railway station. Novotel was clean, convenient and staff were very good. Thanks Virgine in reception for the day trip suggestion!
Didn't eat in at all. City is walkable - providing you are reasonably fit. Otherwise a City pass (quite expensive) or (my recommendation) day trip tickets - 'Liberte 1 jour' at 4.9euro gives access to bus, metro, tram and funicular transport. There are also their equivalent of our London 'Boris bikes' for hire = the Velo V, if you are feeling fit and adventurous.
Visit the Parc de La Tete d'or (A golden head is said to be buried there) - lots to do and see, Zoo, gardens, displays etc & all FREE!
If you are planning to see the Resistance Museum - forget it until October when it reopens after refurb.
Walk the boardwalk alongside the Rhone with the locals - very entertaining.
Go to the Museum at the Place des Terraux, with Rodin sculptures in the grounds.
We took a day trip on the train to the medieval village of Perouges - look it up - worth a visit. Eat at the Auberge Du Coq off the Square.Take the Amberiu train to Meximieux (14.2 euro return) and walk from there. Well signed. Don't forget to punch your train ticket before boarding!!!
FOOD - too much to tell. However there are 3 streets full of Restaurants -
1. Rue des Marronniers near Place Bellecour. Try A La Peche Aux Moules - great mussels
2. Rue Merciere up towards Terraux
3 Rue St Jean and Place Neuve St Jean in the Old Town. Les Pampres Rouges had great Onion soup.
There is also a cafe bar De La Ficelle (means 'string' - the locals name for the funicular) near the funicular entrance. Lovely salads.
Visit - it's worth it. Have a great time

Room Tip: Take a high floor

Supposedly a 4 star but I feel closer to a 3 star. 2 minute walk for station and easy 5 minute walk to car hire. Rooms are modern and well appointed and clean, aircon, lift etc. A bit tricky to drive to and out of this area if you dont know the road system - trust your Navman. Breakfast good. Large shopping centre adjacent with Carrefour.

This hotel is located right next to the Part Dieu station, which also has a train from and to the airport and takes credit cards like Amex. The metro station is just across the square so you can get into the centre (old part) in 20 mins. Taxis are right there as well (under the hotel).

The rooms are quite spacious for a Novotel. Pretty bare bones but that is the chain. There is a bar and a restaurant. I got a good price but that was a corp deal. Reception can speak English if you need it. Ther is an Irish pub round the corner, I didn't go there but I did see it.

Nice place for business. Quiet and well connected. Restaurant is fair, not luxury but OK.

The stay in the hotel was as expected - no bad surprises. It is a Novotel like all the other. Though the staff was very helpful (especially first night finding us a restaurant). Recommendation was indeed good same was for the second day and several technical tips and hints we needed. The first room had a problem with safe-lock and we got our rooms changed. Second one was however less attractive - view on the station. And that would be the only drawback. Food was good and in the morning there was a selection at the buffet even around 11AM (rare in France). So overall positive impression.
