We spent four nights over a long weekend recently. We have been to Lyon many times to visit family and this time we chose the Sofitel because we liked the luxury sound of the hotel and its location. It is close to the Place Bellecour, the southern end of the main shopping district, and only a short walk over the Saone river to the old town. We were not disappointed.
The room was almost all we expected, more about that in a minute, a deluxe room with river view, it was modern in style, very comfortable, enormous bed, free tea, coffee and bottled water. The walk in shower big enough to swing a small metaphorical cat.
We ate once on the Trois Domes, a Michelin starred restaurant on the 8th floor of the hotel, a fantastic dining experience with sublime food and superb service all while looking out over the town. We also ate once in the Silk Brasserie which still pushed the right buttons. There are two bars, the one on the ground floor is convenient and served more than just drinks, throughout the day. The best bar was also on the 8th floor with breathtaking views over the river Rhone but only open in the evenings.
If you were not satisfied with the dining choices available in the hotel, then there are dozens of restaurants within walking distance.
Breakfast was served up on the 8th floor as well. I disagree with another review I read about this. There was plenty of choice and there were changes to the food selection every day. I really envoyed the variety of breads available. Everything just was so fresh, well laid out, and a delight to wander round making selections.
The hotel was clean, well maintained, very polite and helpful staff.
Now to what might have been a negative, but it wasnt, due to excellent customer management skills. We booked a room with a bath and a shower but there was no bath. I went down to complain, immediately the receptionist called the guest relationship manager, Edouard, who arrived within two minutes. He explained that the there was a mistake on the English website because the modern rooms in the size we booked dont have tubs. He then took us to a different, classic, room and showed us what might be available and asked if we wanted to look at swapping. In fact the room was smaller so we stayed with the initial room and in the end we knew we made the right choice.
The place is not cheap, but you get what you pay for. We have stayed in four 4 or 5 star hotels in Lyon so far and this was by far the best.
If everything works out we will be back there next year for the annual family visit.
