We spent four nights over a long weekend recently. We have been to Lyon many times to visit family and this time we chose the Sofitel because we liked the luxury sound of the hotel and its location. It is close to the Place Bellecour, the southern end of the main shopping district, and only a short walk over the Saone river to the old town. We were not disappointed.
The room was almost all we expected, more about that in a minute, a deluxe room with river view, it was modern in style, very comfortable, enormous bed, free tea, coffee and bottled water. The walk in shower big enough to swing a small metaphorical cat.
We ate once on the Trois Domes, a Michelin starred restaurant on the 8th floor of the hotel, a fantastic dining experience with sublime food and superb service all while looking out over the town. We also ate once in the Silk Brasserie which still pushed the right buttons. There are two bars, the one on the ground floor is convenient and served more than just drinks, throughout the day. The best bar was also on the 8th floor with breathtaking views over the river Rhone but only open in the evenings.
If you were not satisfied with the dining choices available in the hotel, then there are dozens of restaurants within walking distance.
Breakfast was served up on the 8th floor as well. I disagree with another review I read about this. There was plenty of choice and there were changes to the food selection every day. I really envoyed the variety of breads available. Everything just was so fresh, well laid out, and a delight to wander round making selections.
The hotel was clean, well maintained, very polite and helpful staff.
Now to what might have been a negative, but it wasnt, due to excellent customer management skills. We booked a room with a bath and a shower but there was no bath. I went down to complain, immediately the receptionist called the guest relationship manager, Edouard, who arrived within two minutes. He explained that the there was a mistake on the English website because the modern rooms in the size we booked dont have tubs. He then took us to a different, classic, room and showed us what might be available and asked if we wanted to look at swapping. In fact the room was smaller so we stayed with the initial room and in the end we knew we made the right choice.
The place is not cheap, but you get what you pay for. We have stayed in four 4 or 5 star hotels in Lyon so far and this was by far the best.
If everything works out we will be back there next year for the annual family visit.

Room Tip: If you can, book a room with a river view

Its the city of Paul Bocuse & his restaurants and Boucherons and the Sofitel is right in its heart. The restaurant in the hotel -'The Trois Domes" is a 1 star Michelin experience that does not disappoint. Breakfast is in the same room and the views of Lyon are brilliant. Our room overlooked the Rhone and was all we could want. The hotel is a very short walk to Place Bellecour where there are countless restaurants there and in the small streets off it. Bocuse restaurant "Le Sud" - more bistro style, is close by and offers a very good value dining experience. A walk over the river Soane takes you into the old city with a brilliant selection of real Lyonaise food. The hotel were efficient, friendly, polite and informed. Just a really pleasant experience.

This upscale hotel experience is more for the luxury traveler than a guy who is typically a business traveler like myself. A lot of effort has been put into amenities (spa/lounge/porter service). I have been to a lot of hotels. I can handle my bags to my room, unless I ask for help. I sensed a bit of disappointment from the bag porter at his 2 euro tip. (He was expecting a bigger tip. My grocery store at home provides carry service and refuses all tips by policy!) He masked it quickly and said merci. My upgraded room did have a table, but it was not at a good desk height relative to the chairs for laptop work. I always travel with my laptop. I would like to see a couple more outlets for electronics, because I am always using/charging cellphones, tablets, and laptops. And while the room was nice, clean and comfortable, it was clearly worn. The hardwood floor is very nice and feel great under foot, but the heavy oak furnishing all have battered scratches and nicks and the wall frame at the shower window showed wood rot on the outside. The rooms need some refurbishment to be the first class accommodation that you are aiming for. The breakfast is very expensive, so I just walked a few blocks for something cheaper. When walking back to the hotel every night, there is a homeless who sleeps outside under the SW front overhang. It is an upscale experience which effort put into things I don't value much (porters / flowers / spa), vs things I do value (work desk, outlets, affordable breakfast). I much enjoyed a new Mercure I had just stayed at in Clermont-Ferrand to this "upscale" and somewhat pretentious cousin.

Excellent service all around. Great location for exploring and access to transport. Silk Restaurant was the best we found for quality and value.
Bathroom was in need of renovation - how about a shower curtain?
Breakfast very good, but could use some variety, everyday exactly the same. Breakfast room staff could clear plates without always being asked.

We stayed in this beautiful hotel for five nights. It is extremely comfortable and the staff are efficient while not being intrusive. They are particularly friendly. Would definitely stay there again. The only complaint we had was that when we ordered a la carte items only on the room service menu we were charged for those items plus the 26 euros pp for continental which we did not order. It is not made clear that there is a minimum charge....not a small amount at that price! Overall a good experience thoughm

Every single staff member was pleasant and eager to help and serve. I arrived there late not looking so good after a day of driving with my middle sized dog and my recently passed grandmother's 1986 Citroen tiny car filled with blond dog hair and I received no weird looks! The whole thing was funny now that I think about it. :) Nice change of pace in France! Every staff member was quick, responsive, and attentive. They all went above and beyond expected (night and day shifts). I was reminded what a 5 star hotel is all about. The smallest room was "not" so small. It was very clean. The furniture was somewhat old but somehow it worked and still looked classy. The bed and linens were clean and comfy. The bathroom spotless clean and modern. Thank you Sofitel for a night of luxury. I truly relaxed and unwind before heading to another full days' drive!
