“Interesting museum with some interesting interactive exhibits.”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

The unusual layout of this museum (free entry with City card - located next to the amphitheatres) spirals downwards from the entrance and means you don't missing anything. It also means that access is easy for wheelchairs and baby strollers.

It covers the ancient history of Lyon. Clips from films are shown on big screens to illustrate points... as these are almost all American films and subtitled in French, understanding them is easy! Exhibits are labelled in French and English and audio guides were free of charge in several languages.

There are are other technological toys, using Xbox Knect, augmented reality, etc adding to the interest. You need a child/teenager for some of these to work out how to use them as the instructions are not always clear!

If I had to single out the thing I liked best it would be the mosaics.

“Classical history”
Reviewed October 27, 2012

The museum provides a well-organized introduction to classical history and Gallo-Roman culture. The exhibition is organized by cultural aspects, such as religion, daily life, gladiators, and leads you from one display to the next gracefully. Upon exiting, you can go straight to the Roman theaters and wander the ruins.

“Mosaics made it worth it”
Reviewed October 27, 2012

After visiting the spectacular ruins, the museum was a bit of a let-down. The architecture is unusual – the museum is shaped like a corkscrew drilling into the hillside. Although some of the material is interesting enough, the exhibits are rarely inspiring, and none of the interactive items work well. The exception has to be the beautifully restored mosaics. They alone actually made it worth the price of entry.

“A museum not to be missed!”
Reviewed October 22, 2012

The building itself is a masterpiece of architecture. The Roman artifacts are extensive and very well displayed. The English audiophones add much to the experience if you are not a French speaker. Then you can go outside to the Roman arena (amphitheatre) which held 10,000 people. Awe inspiring experience!

“A very enjoyable visit!”
Reviewed October 22, 2012

The site of this museum is spectacular, and the museum itself contains many treasures and is well set up. My husband has mobility difficulties, but was able to see the ruins very well from the pathway down to the museum, and from a big window on the lowest level. There are elevators so he was able to get to every floor. The staff was vry helpful. We enjoyed the overhead view of the great mosaic of the seasons. The museum showed us the size and importance of the Roman city and we realize that there must be remains under much of the center of contemporary Lyon. The one drawback we noticed was the lack of a cafe. There do not seem to be places to eat close by. The museum is in a park, so bringing a picnic or snack would be a good idea.
