An important centre over the centuries for the silk-weaving industry in Europe, Lyon is a natural home for a textile museum. This little gem has a wonderful collection of textiles, including carpets, dating from Coptic Egypt to the present day, all beautifully lit and displayed. And there are some amazing red armchairs to sit back in and relax before continuing to explore. The other half of the complex, the Museum of Decorative Arts, has displays of faience, majolica and silver, but also contains a number of furnished rooms, donated to the museum. These latter are fascinating to anyone at all interested in how the French used to live.

If you're interest in fabrics and garments, this museum should be top of your list of things to visit in Lyon.
You need a map to make sure you visit all areas. There is little information in English - check for room guides in a box near the entrance to some rooms.
The gift shop is excellent - lots of lovely scarves.
Free with the Lyon card.

Lyon has a history with the textile industry and this museum has some very unique examples on display. We live with fabrics and it is interesting to see what fabric works of art the tradesmen created centuries ago. A scaled down version of the Jacquard loom is on display which was the reason we wanted to visit this museum.

Musee des Tissus is a real surprise. I learned so much about fabrics and the major role that Lyon has played in that role over the centuries. A beautiful museum in a lovely setting. It will only take an hour or so, but well worth it.
